Anyone flying to Anchorage, Alaska anytime soon?

Gotcha. Sadly you missed me heading out by about a week. Alaska is funny with ammo, which is why I started handloading. Though certain powders can be very tough to find sometimes. Obviously you were lucky to find a less common caliber still on the shelf.

Anyone flying to Anchorage, Alaska anytime soon?

This is worded a bit confusing. Do you want the ammo going up to Anchorage AK or coming back down from Anchorage? I am currently in Michigan and head back up to Anchorage as my final destination the 30th.

Would you miss a cheek piece if the rifle came without one?

Much like checkering it may improve the rifle aesthetically when done well but for practical purposes, not so much. As a lefty I have two custom stocks with cheek pieces and two without. Well, one has a right-handers cheek piece. Can't honestly say it makes a difference to me. When it comes to...

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

Of the handful of rifles I own the one I'd say fits this bill the best is my Savage 16 in 7mm-08. It's factory action, trigger and 22" barrel on a Boyds laminate stock with a 2-10X 40mm Vortex scope on top. With a sling and a box magazine of 4 cartridges it's a hair over 9 pounds. Comfortable...

Pictures of Red River Hog Shoulder Mounts

I've taken a few different species of hogs and a javelina and watched them a lot. Not once have I seen one with their mouths as wide open as they are depicted. So I decided a closed moth worked here. I could see it being open an couple centimeters or so to show off teeth better. That's my take...

What are your favorite hunting camp meals?

Anything involving something I have taken. I understand outfitters and PHs have a lot of clients, but I had one hunt which involved a lodge where a few hunters came and went through the lodge. There was plenty of game meat, and all the dishes were great, but in the week I was there I ate...

Pictures of Red River Hog Shoulder Mounts

I don't have a Red River hog, but I do have it's cousin, the bushpig. I had a closed-mouth, right turn wall pedestal mount. Brings back memories for me.

What's wrong with leaving it as a 30-06? Yeah, it's a tad boring, but also incredibly useful.

    Kudu and Caliber

Were I to take a 3rd, I'd repeat the first two. 30-06 with 168 grain TTSX handloads. Honestly I wouldn't hesitate using anything from my 7mm-08 to my 375 Ruger. But the tried and true 30-06 has worked with such consistency, why knock it.

Show me your Boyd Laminate Stock

Here's an Accurate Innovations stock I got in 2012 for my Ruger African in 375 Ruger. Zero complaints, it has done the job well. But for a DG Rifle in laminate wood I'm not sure I'd say it's any better or worse than the Boyd's Platinum IMO.

Small bell useful in Bear country (MT), what do you think ?

As an Alaskan who walks in bear country on a regular basis, forget the bells. They won't hear them, or at least not from a useful distance. I have pretty good hearing and I walk past folks with bells on their packs and dogs all the time. I don't hear the bells until I am well within sight. If...

    7mm-08 and Africa

If available I'd suggest the Swift A Frame over those boat tails. I personally use 140 gr Barnes TTSX handloads in my 7mm-08 and they drop caribou with ease. I'd take it to Africa for anything up to kudu.

.375 H&H single bullet for multiple hunts survey

As you've proven, the Partition will do the job. But in short, the others are better. The bonded and monometal bullets expand as well but retain more weight, typically all of their weight.

.375 H&H single bullet for multiple hunts survey

For factory ammo either the 300 gr TBBC or the A frame IMO. I used handloaded 300 gr Peregrine Bushmaster bullets in my 375 Ruger for a buff, black wildebeest, steenbok, impala and blesbok last hunt. Hit them all like a hammer.

Coming to AK to hunt moose?

Honestly, as a resident I think residents should watch it too. People don't always realize what they are getting into when taking a moose. One of the crazier stories I heard was my hunting partner from a caribou hunt. We'd taken two each over two days of hunting. Each day we got them quartered...

    Products that just won't DIE

My Buck 112s. The black handled one is around 7 years old and used for work. I use it daily to open cardboard boxes, which aren't gently on an edge. It has lost at least a quarter inch to the tip from sharpening and the thumb stud broke off after a year. But it's doing fine otherwise, locking...

First Gun Purchase for new Hunter

Well, I voted for the 308, though I own two 30-06. I took one to Namibia twice and nothing walked away. If he's a right hander I'd go with the Winchester M70 for a great first rifle he'll always appreciate. Certainly nothing wrong with the Tikka T3, I can also vouch for the Savage M10. Neither...

What's the most Mambas you have seen on a safari?

Zero. Two trips to Namibia in May both times. Two trips to RSA, September and January. I have seen a spitting cobra and a puff adder in Namibia on the place I hunted. And a couple other vipers in Etosha NP. But not a mamba to speak about, which suits me just fine.

I've gained a few and lost a few in the past 20+ years. Current crew is a Lamy Safari, a Conklin Duragraph and a pair of Conklin All Americans. All useful, but I will admit, that Safari is close to bullet proof for a fountain pen. Each has converters and I have a few bottles of ink from...

I own two and love them both. A basic #1 in 30-06 I picked up brand new and one in 300 Win Mag I got used that has some interesting custom wood. Horn-only mounts?

While it's not very common, I have seen a couple sets of kudu horns with just the skull cap covered in felt or leather. I also recall a set of roan horns like that on wall in Namibia. I can't say if it's "frowned upon" but I can say it's not their call, it's yours. Heck, I've heard of folks...

    PLAINS GAME CALIBER

    Best calibre for Giraffe

My 2 cents, for an all around cartridge I'd go with a 375 of your choice. I used a 375 Ruger for mine on a lower neck shot that my PH suggested. Honestly my 30-06 would have worked for that shot, but had I needed to take a normal heat/lung vitals shot the 375 was a much better choice. The hide...

My go to is the 125 gr Slick Trick Magnum. I used it on 515 gr total weight arrows out of a 70# draw bow last time for pass throughs on a nyala and blesbok. On my first hunt they soundly dropped my blue wildebeest with not quite a pass through, but the rig was a bit lighter. I actually used...

Am I the only one who has ever missed?

Around 20 years ago I was chatting with a guy about hunting Africa. He actually said to expect to wound and lose one animal a trip. Attacked by dangerous game while hunting something else?

I've been chased by a few cow moose here in Alaska. They don't seem dangerous, but when you seem like a threat to her calf, she most definitely is. Find a tree (or a van once) and keep it between you and her until she loses interest. My first two hunts in Africa were on a big farm in Namibia...

.308 Win in Africa - fan or foe?

My first two hunts in Namibia were with a 30-06 with 168 TTSX bullets. Everything dropped within feet if not right there. Eight animals total with that rifle and ammo combo. The list went from springbok to zebra and two kudu. There isn't enough difference between a 30-06 and your .308 for any...

7mm/08 for Plains Game? Good or Bad?

Actually the moral of the story to me is take whatever you want, but if funny things like this happen, be prepared to use the camp gun. I took my 375 Ruger to Namibia and South Africa. Even less chance of finding that ammo, so I made sure I knew what was in camp as a back up plan. Each time the...

7mm/08 for Plains Game? Good or Bad?

@Heeler75 the 30-06 was based on the 30-03, and the 30-03 was based on the 7X57 Mauser. I love my two 30-06, but that is a basic historical fact. The US did not create the cartridge blindly. @Wiley64, Ruark had nothing to do with a 7mm-08, which didn't even exist when he died in 1965. He did...

    A new break action single

Yes, if it were good quality but under $2K for a base model with possibilities for upgrades. I realize small production and under a grand is not realistic. Heck, $2K might not be either. My first centerfire rifle was a T/C Encore, and I'm up to two of them and two Ruger #1s. So I have no...

If you could only keep three guns, what would they be?

Honestly this is just asking me to think like my grandparents or even myself in my 20s. Ruger 10/22 Thompson/Center Encore in 30-06 Remington 870 12 gauge. To be quite honest, the 12 gauge gets little use anymore, so I could switch that to a pistol.
