What have you hunted with your .303?

From memory it was a mixture of factory 174 grain softs and the heavy Woodleigh softs.

505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

Man, I had some wild times with my Sako Brown Bear in .500 Jeffery! Brilliant rifle, fed beautifully! Once I put a fine bead on it, it was superbly accurate. The first time I fired it was at an inbound, angry buffalo bull just eight metres away uphill. I shot another troublesome buffalo at two...

Any reason not to use a 350 grain .375 bullet for buffalo

I love the [emoji639][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]] grain Woodleigh RNSN HDs for buffalo, super emphatic, dozens of good bulls with this bullet. But if I were to switch to a TSX I would use the...

May I ask, out of curiosity, what would the average whitetail setup be in terms of draw weight and arrow weight? I don’t know much about deer hunting but I’m interested in learning.

The ability for both blades in the Beast to simultaneously and independently fold back in to avoid obstacles and then immediately redeploy got me intrigued enough to give them a chance.

    Broadheads

I agree, I was opposed to mechanicals until Beast broadheads got invented, but a mate has experienced great success with Sevr. Last year I got four huge old water buffalo bulls with Beasts, super quick and clean, no damage to the blades or ferrule.

Amen to that! A [emoji639]:[emoji637] ratio (or close) on a two-blade is the go for short draws, trad or low poundage. There’s a fantastic podcast with John Dudley interviewing trauma surgeon Dr Peter Attia (spelling from memory) on the Nock-On podcast where some interesting things come up...

Don’t follow us Aussie bowhunters too closely, we’ll warrant cancellation! Dr Ashby is a legend, I love his work, but time and technology do change and new things get discovered. None of us know everything. When I killed my first buffalo bull with a longbow I used a 1200 grain arrow. For my...

22-250 and 243 for "small" plains game

With a 55 grain Barnes TSX the .22-250 is an over-achiever (boars, buffalo, wild cattle in Australia). I think it would be wonderful for impala, baboons, warthogs and even old kudu bulls, but only in situation where I could take my time, get nicely setup and pick my shot unhurried.

    Bowmar BEAST Broadhead Test

Putting these to good use on Australian buffalo, they’re absolutely amazing! The ability for both blades to independently fold back and reopen almost instantaneously combined with the extra cutting diameter is devastating even on big bulls.

I read it a few times and it seems that grain weight and spine may have been inadvertently mixed. Hopefully OP can clarify. My response erred on the presumption (never presume - my apologies) that he meant spine.

Another recommendation for Beast mechanicals, too. I was always opposed to the idea of mechanicals until these things were invented. Four big Australian buffalo with them so far.

Any hunts you wouldn’t do again?

Fair points, Bob. I reckon I can pinpoint tokenism more in towns and cities rather than out in the bush. Maybe things are a little more real and down to earth in the bush. You’re right about the old blokes not running up after they speared buffalo. They’d stay quiet and give it time, then...

Any hunts you wouldn’t do again?

Been awhile since I’ve seen this wonderful movie, Bob. Which bit is tokenism? I can’t recall. I lived there for a couple of years and it was very special to show people that video and see their faces light-up recognising family and remembering old times. A friend still lives at one of the...

Aside from Africa, what are some memorable guided hunts around the world that rival the experience of an African Safari?

I’ve started doing a backpacking hunt with my brother in Arnhem Land each year, and it is the equal (in my opinion) of my African adventures. Sleeping in hammocks, needing to stay alert for buffalo and bulls throughout the night, the campfire, stars… and some epic encounters with the big bovines!

Water buffalo and double rifles up close

I’ve done it lots, and it sucks. Culling to get rid of buffalo from cattle areas; culling to protect springs; culling because there’re too many and they’re struggling waiting for the rains to come. Even when you get as much meat as possible it still isn’t enjoyable. My understanding is that the...

I’ve met one of them on the road years ago, had a beer with him. But both outfits have an excellent reputation here in Australia and Mark and Tim (members here) can readily and very happily vouch for Big Country, I believe. I know some of the country these blokes hunt and it is magnificent...

    Blaser R8 & Dangerous Game?

Magnificent old bull for the dog today, first crack with my new Swaro glass, 1-6x30! A single 350 grain Woodleigh RNSN HD did the trick, and that was that. He even did the death bellow which is unusual but does happen. His right was busted off, a truly awesome old bull and greatly appreciated by us.

Which Woodleigh 300gn Projectile for Water Buffalo

Hydros will pass through for sure, but it has never been an issue for me (the bulls are rarely in mobs and even when they are they’re not densely packed and there’ll be a safe angle). The benefit of the Hydro is straight-line travel and penetration no matter the angle. However, they kind-of zip...

Which Woodleigh 300gn Projectile for Water Buffalo

From your list I would pick the Hydros or the HDs. The PPSNs would be fine as well. The FMJs work, of course, but do less damage and would be my last choice.
