Any current sources for some of the harder to find ammo? 600/700NE, 4 bore, 950 jdj?

There is a fellow on youtube (Kentucky Ballistics) who I believe shoots all of those. Don't know if he actually owns all the rifles, though. But perhaps he would be willing to part with some brass if/when they have been reloaded enough times.

Slow burning powder and a 23" barrel

I see that @Mark A Ouellette was faster than me in replying. Typing on the phone is sloooow :-) Yes, it would probably not do much difference, but it will do some, even if the majority of the extra powder burns after the bullet has left the barrel. The extra powder takes up space, which means...

Slow burning powder and a 23" barrel

Yes it does. Ish. But the pressure curve is different as the peak pressure is reached sooner. And it could get into dangerously high pressures if too much of a too fast powder is used. If you load e.g. a 7mm RM with a pistol powder (i.e. fast) you could only load the case to so full before it...

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

I haven't taken my 404 for any DG hunt, but my hope is that I'll be able to do that in the future. Have owned that rifle for 5-6 years, and in that time I have not purchased or fired a single factory loaded cartridge. I actually started reloading because I wanted a big bore rifle, where the ammo...

    3 Ruger Rifles For Sale

Very nice wood. Not too familiar with Ruger in general, or the "express" model in particular. Would that be standard on a factory rifle, or have the stocks been upgraded afterwards? Also, I thought that the M77 had a tang safety, but from these picture it does not seem like that.

    Question On Heart Shots

Mixed results - a few of the deer I've shot in the heart/top of the heart have dropped on the spot. Not likely that the spine was hit, but perhaps a bullet (or bone) fragment might have hit the spine. Don't know if there would be enough energy in such secondary projectiles to stun the animal. I...

Early stages of potential 1st safari

Probably not much difference, but your bog pod might be a bit sturdier/steadier than most other tripods. I believe that quad-sticks are also getting more common. Takes slightly longer to set up (an extra second), but is super-steady. Does not allow for as much horizontal panning, though.

    North Fork producer

I don't yet have a lot of experience with the NF bullets, but when we spoke on the Swedish Game Fair 2 years(?) ago, you recommended the PP bullet in 404J for the local big game, as it will open up a little quicker in softer targets than the SS. I bought a box or two to try them out. Loaded...

    North Fork producer

AFAIK all the production equipment was moved to Sweden following the sale of the company to Mr. Boström a few years ago. According to the web page it is located in Kristianstad in southern Sweden. I *believe* that Osby (a smaller town nearby) was listed previously...

Did pretty much the same thing around the same time last year, however only 7 days of touring on our own. We had very good dealings with Acacia Travel (on recommendation from Philip), to whom we communicated our want-to-see's. Through them we got an itinerary worked out, with rental car...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

Interesting, but anecdotal so to speak. These particular ones are almost the same length, but either the 375 is loaded longer, or the 416 shorter, than allowed by CIP/SAAMI specs. It is quite possible that a 375 with a long bullet, but still within spec, is longer than a 416 loaded with a...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

The 416 Rigby is a considerably longer cartridge if I'm not mistaken. Max COL for the Rigby is 95.25 mm (3.750"), and for the 375HH it's 91.4mm (3.600"). The empty case is not that much different in length, though. So I guess that it would be possible to build a 416 Rigby rifle on an...

    European style plaques for skulls

Very beautiful mounts @Red Leg, but can I agree with @Ontario Hunter to some extent. However, you've basically solved the 'angle issue' by hanging them rather high up. Nice to look at, and won't poke your eye out. :) In effect that is somewhat like having the skulls mounted lower, but at an...

Any point in a 'small' double rifle?

I can certainly see the use for a double in "not Africa". But it would really depend on what type of hunting you do. On a driven hunt, where game may come flying fast past you at close range, or being able to stalk really close to a deer/moose/boar/bear, sure. For those 'across-the-valley'...

404 Jeffrey - Oh Boy, another project!

Nah, the Tembo uses (used?) a 'true' .400 cal bullet. And I think only a handful of rifles were ever made, so the chance of this being one them is slim. But since they were a bit 'experimental', any markings on the action a/o barrel may not mean anything. And this is certainly true for any...

404 Jeffrey - Oh Boy, another project!

416/404.... It could well be that you have bought yourself a wildcat of some sort (i.e. a non-standardized cartridge). The name suggests that the base cartridge is one of the 416's (Rigby, Remington, Taylor, Hoffman, Weatherby, Dakota etc), but necked up to 404 (which is actually .423 calibre)...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

I would say "Not really", especially not in a hunting situation. Perhaps you can feel the difference if you really concentrate on it when pulling the trigger, but why should you? There are so many things that affect felt recoil, and bullet velocity is just one of them. Of more importance I would...

Help me complete my 3 gun collection

Another option, but probably not a clever choice, could be the 6.5-284 Norma. A 284 Winchester necked down to 6.5. Previously a wildcat until standardized by Norma ~25 years ago. Has a little more oomph than the 6.5x55, but not overly much. According to wikipedia, it has some history with...

Help me complete my 3 gun collection

6.5-300 Weatherby? 264 WinMag? 26 Nosler? Of these, I guess that only the WinMag could be called 'classic' (1950's). The others are only approx 10 years old. The 6.5x55 is a great cartridge. But it is for all intents and purposes very similar to the 7x57. The same goes for the 6.5x54MS.

    ZIMBABWE Hunting Information

Thanks again. I certainly believe you it can be (and has been) interpreted as banning firearms for hunting trips to Zim. ZIMBABWE Hunting Information

Well, it would probably be a good idea to have the 'verdict' from the authorities in writing before booking any tickets. But it is perhaps harder than it seems, since both of the ones I've identified (police dept and ISP) clearly say that they don't really care about hunting tourism, or at least...

    ZIMBABWE Hunting Information

Thank you - I've seen the same document (or a translation thereof) previously. That is the reason I was initially so sure of it being forbidden. The wording is strong and sweeping, but it seems to me that the intent is banning arms exports - not to stop people from going hunting. "To prevent...

    ZIMBABWE Hunting Information

It seems possible that some things might have changed, or are as mentioned, treated differently in different countries. To Bridge or Not to Bridge - That is the question....

Maybe the best course of action would be to swap it with someone who is really looking for a DSB? Don't really know what that market looks like... Being lefthanded there are sadly so many choices that have already been made for me. M98's, or clones thereof, are few and far between.

To Bridge or Not to Bridge - That is the question....

Personally, I would do what @PeteG recommends. Even if you only hunt with iron sights right now, it gives you more options down the line. Unless you *really* think that the front square bridge is an abomination to the eye, you should keep it. If I squint a little when looking at the first...

Zimbabwe Big Game Safari Rates Question

On a side note (and not specifically for Zim), what is the reason for the very different daily rates between hunting PG and DG? It seems like daily rates, where I see them listed are 3-4 times higher for DG hunts. Some types of extra costs seem to be itemized separately (park ranger fees...

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

I'll bet that almost any expanding bullet will work well on a moose - they're not armour plated. I've never hunted any kind of bear, and from what I understand they can be fairly 'soft' targets, but I guess that there could be situations where you'd want to drop them quick-quick. So in that...

Too bad we're on different sides of the Atlantic. I have a a hundred or so I would gladly part with for a beer. Moose hunting in Sweden

Not off the top of my head. I guess that such companies exist, but hunting here is largely (as has been stated before) very often a "local affair". Did a quick internet search and these are among those that came up; https://www.nordguide.se/moose-hunt-stalking-and-calling/...

    Moose hunting in Sweden

Unfortunately not true anymore. I believe that we're now down to ~65,000 moose taken per year. The last decade, the forestry corporations that own a lot of land have been quite aggressive with their moose quotas ("forcing" hunting clubs that lease the hunting rights to shoot more - otherwise...

Hunting with dangerous game cartridges outside of Africa?

I've used my 404 on two roe deer (A-Frame 400gr) and one fallow (NorthFork PP 400gr). One of the roes got a bit messed up as there were a lot of secondary projectiles (bone hit) so it was rather bloodshot, and some meat was wasted. I guess it could have happened with a smaller calibre as well...
