CANADA: Mountain Goat 2021 - British Columbia Trophy Mountain Outfitters

A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Andre with BCTMO. The intent of his message was to try to bait me into agreeing to go on my first ever mountain hunt with only 30 days notice. Of course he was successful and I’m left here wondering if I’ve left my senses. Wondering how these...

Kambaku - The Story Of Harry Manners - Ivory Hunter

Just finished this book. A worthy read for sure. The author hunted elephant in Mozambique from the mid 1930’s until commercial hunting was closed in 1953. In that time he accounted for over 1000 elephant. Several of which were over the magical 100 pound mark. His largest was a great specimen...

NAMIBIA: Dangerous Game Hunting with JKO Hunting Safaris - Africa 2020

After a while back in the US my mind has finally settled down and decided to allow me put this tale to pen. I’m still struggling with how to start or finish the story but here we go. Quarry – Non-exportable elephant. The government mandates that it must be a bull at least 35 years of age. 100%...

    Theory of relativity

I always considered the physics geeks to be a bunch of eggheads with too much time on their hands, whose parents probably didn’t let them go outside very often. But I think that Einstein guy was onto something with that theory of relativity. Honestly I even thought most of what it suggested was...

    Namibia bound!!!

Headed to Namibia with @Jaques Spamer next month and as with all hunting trips the anticipation is mounting. At first I thought Covid and the testing requirements were going to be the toughest hurdle associated with the trip. However as the weeks have passed since booking, the airlines have...

    Traveling to Canada

I’m looking for some feedback on traveling north of the border. I’ve booked a bear hunt in British Columbia this spring. One of the outfitters suggested that I fly into Seattle, cross the border in Sumas, overnight in Hope, and finish the drive the following day. The logic she used was two fold...

    SOUTH AFRICA: Redemption Pig

This story started two years ago when I gave chase to the same slippery swine on three separate occasions. Managed to get within 15 or 20 feet of him in a thicket but could not make a positive identification. Gone. Had a group push him out of a thicket but I made the mistake of focusing on the...

    Cabelas’s in Denver

I’m headed out to WY next week for some prairie dog hunting. I want to stop by Cabela’s in Denver when we pass through however there are two listed. One is on the south side in Lone Tree and the other is north of town in Thornton. I assume one is probably more “robust” than the other. Any...

    Amazing 1000 yd group

Last summer a good friend of mine, Mike Wilson, did something truly amazing. He shot a 5 shot group at 1000 yds that was originally measured at 1.068 inches. It scored a perfect 50 with 5X's. It was recently certified at 1.087. Don't ask me how they missed 19 thousandths on the first...

    Looking for an Elk hunt

Recently I've been considering an elk hunt for 2020. I won't be able to make it to DSC or SCI this year so I thought it would be a good idea to come here and poll the group knowing many of us do more than just hunt Africa. Any and all input is welcome so please chime in. Prefer a wilderness...

    Packaging and shipping raw leather

I’ve got an eland and a buffalo hide that I need to ship from Georgia to Iowa. They’re dried, salted, and folded so the size is manageable however they are still big and heavy. I would estimate the weight of them to be around 75 to 100 pounds. Im looking for suggestions on packaging and carriers...

    BOTSWANA: Tholo Hunt 2018

It's been about a month and a half since I got back and it has taken me this long to put together the beginnings of my hunt report. Silly things like work and household responsibility have been occupying me. Here's the start of it. Tholo 2018 The Plan This year started with one singular...

Bullet Performance 375 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw

I have to start this with a slight confession. I’ve never given much consideration to bullet performance. Preferring instead to put it where it matters and let biology take over. With that out in the open, I was thoroughly impressed with Federal’s Premium 250 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw...

    Delta 200 April 13th

It’s that time of year again and I’m just a couple of weeks away from my trip across the pond. I’ll be on Delta 200 on April 13th. If there’s anyone else on the same flight then please look me up and let’s plan on a cold libation and take a few minutes to swap stories while we wait on the...

    Oops! There go my Swaros!

So I’m sitting quietly enjoying a mild Georgia morning in my 16 foot tripod stand. Suddenly I hear a noise to my left and turn to see my Swarovski SLC 10X42 binoculars starting their 19 foot journey to Mother Earth. I think, no big deal. Sure I’ve ruined a small moment of this perfect morning...

    DSC Convention Events

I’m looking for feedback on the DSC convention and what scheduled events to attend. My inclination is to only attend the show itself however I thought I’d ask if there might be something in particular that is considered a can’t miss event. Any thoughts? Oh and of course I’ll be at the AH...

Donations for the family of Jason Bridger

I posted this on the original thread about Jason but thought it wise to put it on a fresh thread. As many of you already know Jason Bridger was recently lost in a tragic accident. He was a great and well respected friend, PH, and more importantly a family man. His wife Claire is now left to...

    Any hunt, anywhere $30K budget

I’ve been thinking about putting this out there for a while. If you could go on one trip anywhere to hunt anything with a $30K budget, what and where would it be? I’m looking for an epic experience. Sure the trophy matters but the experience is much more important to me. I look forward to...

    USPS to Botswana

While in Botswana this year I learned that my PH had never seen any of the Planet Earth series. Upon learning this I immediately told him I would remedy that for him. On July 24th I took the package, Planet Earth I, Planet Earth II, and two Snickers bars, to the UPS store. The attendant told...

Picked up a new pea shooter yesterday

I picked this guy up yesterday. A new Kimber 8400 Caprivi in 375 H&H. The fit and finish are outstanding which is exactly what you would expect from Kimber. The best part is that it points better than any gun I've ever owned. Now to cry over the price of the glass and figure out what to feed it!!

    Good luck charm???

I think all hunters are superstitious to a degree. For me it's manifested in a few essential items in my kit. The most significant is a hat I purchased some 30 odd years ago from a store called Oshman's in the local mall. It was a typical baseball style camouflage cap made of thinsulate, which...

Thoughts and reflections from an African Safari

Here are a few thoughts I penned after a week back from from my first ever African safari a few years back. Not to be considered advice or for that matter useful in any way. Heads up on your form 4457

I recently sent my 4457 to the outfitter I'll be hunting with this year and they replied saying that it was expired. Sure enough when I looked at it there is an expiration date listed in the top right corner. I thought this was odd because I was told by the agent in Atlanta in 2016 that they...
