Comment by 'Milan' in media '1912 Chilean Mauser in 7x57'

Warne Mauser bases work well. They are steel but the rear one covers the stripper clip slot. So I just cut it off to keep the slot functional. Weaver bases are cheap, light and work also.

The Galas rifle ZG 47 in 9,3 x 62 - all you need

The bolt face will also need to be modified. Why not leave the poor ZG alone? Or at least use cartridges with .476 base? 9.3x64 sounds better and would be less work. Anyway. ZG actions are great but there are fewer and fewer good ones to be found so I cringe when they get "chopped up". But 1) I...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

I imagine so. All the round receivers ala Rem 700 are so for streamlined manufacturing process, not because they are better IMHO. I never had an issue with 2-pos wing style safety on either side of the bolt shroud. But they are pretty stiff. Soft safeties I do not like as they do tend to switch...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Yes true. Only forging a previously cast piece into a billet seems to really pound the molecules into a denser pattern. I don't think they pound the investment castings of precisely cast parts. So, then the forged parts should be stronger than cast ones, no? I'm not an engineer, so have no clue...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

If we assume similar or same manufacturing methods of the time, then this would suggest receivers were forged.

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Possible and good to know. I know the old Mausers were cast. One of the reasons some of the newer actions might be stronger is starting with a billet. But I think even the cast ones are excellent. Do you know if the ZGs were billet or cast? CZ pistol frames are still cast today. I'd like to...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Satterlee action Notice the safety lever on thumb side on the titanium action. C-breech, simple trigger, double square bridge, etc. I think Stuart used to be on here. Hope he still is. I would think his action is probably the best modern rendition of a Mauser. Here is one of his past posts...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

I think all Mausers and Brnos/CZs were/are cast. Used to be sand-cast no less. I have not heard of any of them blowing up.

I like the subject. The M70 is indeed very good. The Extreme Weather models are awesome IMO

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Don’t use them as much as I used to. Not all notches are created equally either. Not a crucial feature but i like it still. Like i said…“for me”.

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Actually i do. Still have lots of 8 mm. But the clips take all ammo with the same rim size so it’s just a feature i like when shooting without scope. Hence yet another reason for QD mounted scope.

    Interarms Mark X 7x57 Mauser

Well the limitation is totally personal. I have worse eyesight and now hunting in prairies more where longer distance shots are common, I prefer more power now. Up until few years ago and in the bush 7 or 8 was max and 4-6 ideal. Never liked the 3-9 variety but they are practical and can still...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

I have experience with the following: 1) Kimber 84L Small, slick, slim and trim and stainless. No integral recoil lug. Only 2 bolt locking lugs. No gas flange on bolt shroud. No integral rails. Very good trigger but too many moving parts and the trigger show was too curled/small. Small trigger...

300 Win Mag or 325 WSM

8mm-06 and .338-06 seem to be really only popular here in Canada. I was ready to do 8mm-06 out of an old Mauser but I did eventually get 8x60. So will give that a try first. For .338-06 I bought a nice Krieger barrel, but never even started the project plus I have a 9.3x62. So, I just sold the...

RJ Renner "Old Africa" Model 70 Upgrade

I never got this obsession with cheek weld or LOP or other fitment issues with generic stocks. Unless you have custom stock made just for you or a target rifle with adjustable everything, I find you are still compromising. I prefer (and yes that is just my preference, not trying to convince...

    .270 vs .280

I figured if I have to handload, I might as well give 7x64 a try. Even .280 AI ammo is not that easy to come by here. So I have some 7x64 RWS ammo, which will provide good brass for reloading. If I need anything stronger than 7x64, I will step up to 7mm PRC.

Hehehe. Good one @BeeMaa. I did manage once in my life to sell pretty much the whole gun collection because I was planning to move out of the country. The Perfect 9.3x62 Safari Rifle

The problem I have is that they ALL bring me joy. What is good is that even the "cheaper" ones do and to the same level of enjoyment. I guess I'm worried that as much as I'd like a Rigby Stalker in .257 and 9.3x62 or a new Mauser 98 (they're all $10K+ over here) that in the end while I would...

    The Perfect 9.3x62 Safari Rifle

I agree but I also struggle with this on more fronts than one. I think the concept of fewer but higher quality things applies to everything in life or any hobby/passion/needs you have really. On the other hand, if we stick to subject of rifles...once you find a rifle that does everything you...

    Scope mounting CZ550

You can probably get different height spacers for the rail mounts. However, if the scope does not interfere with the bolt, I would not worry about seeing the front sight or barrel. if you have the scope properly focused the barrel/sight will be a bit blurry and soon you will just ignore it.

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Yes. The CZs seem heavier. But I did have a Interarms Mark X in .375 that was much lighter (almost 1.5 lbs less) than my CZ 550 in .375 and it was just as comfortable to shoot. Both wood. Just better design/geometry on that old stock on Mark X. I'm sure it recoiled more being lighter, but felt...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Honestly, that Vanguard II I had was in .300 WM. It felt like a 30-06, with a brake I added like a .243. Really. I'm sure the brake made it flex even less but it was precise to begin with. So that stock was not only comfy it seemed to be repeatable. That was the one that put me onto not...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

This I agree with. It is one thing to have a .300 WM recoil "tamed by plastic" and it would be another to have a .458 Lott in cheesy plastic. That said, I still kind of plan on putting together another .375 and maybe a .404. It is based on a VZ24 action and I still have one of those cheap...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

And I kept explaining I did not suggest it as a concept to begin with. So why call something that wasn't there BS? That's all. The subsequent posts were just an expansion on the topic and considering "softer stocks" as a concept at that point, since it was mentioned. Also explaining "the...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

I don't have the book/article, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut. But in factory form, I think they are quite comparable. I do think the CM in factory rifle has more precision potential due to the chamber specs (kind of like the PRC rifles and cartridges). But my 6.5x55 reamer is tighter...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I have read the article after I had sold the Rugers I had. I agreed with the article completely. I thought the rifle was a fine piece just needing exactly the modifications listed in the article. All the article did for me, was to confirm that I was not imagining things. Yet I know there are...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

@Tex .416, I like these discussion. I kind of wonder how the .416 would have felt vs. the .458 in the same stock. Swapping them and trying it only occurred to me after I sold the .416. And to think I could have tried both in both stocks slays me. Such cool experiment for my own piece of mind and...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Are plastic stocks BS. The shytey ones yes. Whether they are flexy or just hard, they all feel like cheap shit to me. Do some actually work? Yes. Are hard ones better than the soft ones? I'd say that depends. If the less flexy stock does not return the action to the same place after the shot...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

First off, I did not say he should use shytey, flexy stock as means of controlling recoil. I simply stated my experience in difference of felt recoil with different stocks. I believe I recommended B&C fiberglass/Kevlar stock. I'd bed it too. Additionally, I feel stock fit may have more effect...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Bs on what? I was saying polymer stocks which flex cushion recoil. Some flex more than others. Fiberglass/kevlar etc. are stiff so would not do that. In those and in wood the shape/geometry of it matters more. Where is the BS??
  43. Milan

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Stock will definitely affect how rifle recoils and how it is felt. I find most polymer stocks soften the recoil (my Tikka superlite was an exception - kicked like a mule even in .308) and those that can be bedded or are well fitting the action tend to be consistent enough. The cheap Hogue...

Why all the 6.5 Creedmoor Hate?

Kind of late for this discussion, but I too did not see what all the hoopla was about the CM. I use 6.5x55 for silhouette shooting. I hunt with 7mm and bigger. I do not drink the short action cool-aid. But overall I have now been downgrading the rifles to smaller, lighter kicking cartridges and...

Finally Found a Brno in 9.3x62

Brno never had them defined as separate models. They were all model Z. The model numbers were strictly for/by exporters. Here in Canada they are typically referred to as 21 (round receiver) and 22 (square receiver). 21/22 F (full length stock), 21/22 H (half stock). Not all 21/22 F were...

    8x68s donor action build suggestions?

The magnum bolt face may be a bit big otherwise I too would recommend the 602. Less work more room for seating bullets out even some longer ones more magazine capacity. Why butcher ZG47? There are not that many of those. If you want to stick to standard length action then win M70 or brno/cz...
