    45-70 dangerous game?

I talked to Craig Boddington about this very question. I was considering taking a Ruger No 1 for Cape Buffalo. I had worked up a load with 500 gr Hornadys and its ballistics were not far off a 458 Win Mag and Mr Boddington's opinion was that with the strength of the Ruger action, proper bullet...

What’s the One Piece of Hunting Gear You Can’t Live Without?

100%. First hunt we went together with another couple. Great hunt and followup tour thru Namibia, Botswana and on to Victoria Falls. Second trip without her but I took my youngest son to Makuya and into Limpopo. The owner stated that it was no place for young grandchildren so my wife said"Well...

    Cape Buffalo leather

I hear you, all Ruger No1s in the gun vault. I'm on the same boat as you. Same scenario. I tried in vain to get a pair of cowboy boots made out of my cape buffalo hide but no luck whatsoever. So I had a couple hunting rifle cases made with sheepskin fleece lining and kudu accents as heirlooms...

Has anyone else been injured while hunting away from home?

My wife and I hunted the Eastern Cape in 2019 and we both agree with your description on the hunting terrain. It can be a challenge, especially as I was waiting for a hip replacement the time. Probably a carryover from the 2002 horse rollover experience. I feel your pain my friend. Safe hunting.

Has anyone else been injured while hunting away from home?

Even when you've been horseback riding for over 30 years I guess. But I suspect that if horses were invented yesterday, they would be banned today in our society

Has anyone else been injured while hunting away from home?

Couldn't agree more. November 2002. Elk hunting near the border of Banff National Park in Alberta. Get up early and ride in the dark to get up high so we decided to take the short cut on a horse trail across a skree slide area. in the dark the horse i was riding stepped off the trail dropping...

    Removing scopes for travel

I have Talley QD rings on my CZ550 and Ruger No 1. I removed them from the firearms when travelling on airlines and put them in my carryon. Couple of reasons. 1. Lightened the gun case 2. Travelling through Heathrow, I didn't trust the airport baggage handlers. When I arrived at the hunting...

Chinese mine causes environmental disaster in zambia on the kafue river

What's the most damage I could do in South Africa for $20,000 Canadian?

Something to consider: if you are in good standing with a good reputable taxidermist near your residence at home, they may be willing to mount your animals on a deferred time line allowing you to spread the taxidermy cost over time. My experience has shown me that the cost of taxidermy plus...

    Optics for 416 rigby

couldn't agree more. put that scope on my CZ 550 416 Rigby and used it on Cape Buffalo, giraffe and sable. I never took it off 1x for all the shots taken. With the Talley QD rings it went back to dead on after taking it off for followup on the Cape Buffalo. Didn't really have to but going into...

Photographing your armory .... Am I the only one.......?

I take no pictures of my firearms to be shared in public. That's from living in a country that is pro firearm banning laws, even that they are all legally acquired (or once were until the federal govt changed the rules and definitions).Sorry Kevin Peacocke (from an earlier request.

    .550 magnum caliber?

I attended SCI in Vegas in 2017. I believe that CZ USA donated a CZ 550 in 550 Magnum that year as well. I was at the CZ USA booth at the time and the auction only had a few minutes until closure, the CZ rep informed me that it was way under the retail price and I should bid on it. I never did...

IMHO, and limited experience, but a CRF in nothing less than 416 calibre. get to know it intimately, shouldering it, dry firing it, putting the safety on and off eyes closed, chambering it, eyes closed. My Cape Buffalo

Thank you for sharing:D. My hunt in Makuya had a similar scenario. The PH conducting his hunt was killed by a buffalo in an ambush, not a wounded one that his client shot but by another one that they weren't aware of. Ten days before we went on my hunt. That's why they are called Dangerous Game...

Why is it that when it comes to the big British Gun Makers, Rigby are the only brand that offers "affordable" models?

I thought that i heard that Rigby had sourced magnum actions from BRNO or CZ post war but I can't remember where I heard it.

Why is it that when it comes to the big British Gun Makers, Rigby are the only brand that offers "affordable" models?

Interesting discussion. I'm sure that there is a member that can answer this question. Because of global changes (ie WWI , WW2 and others) , it is my understanding that Rigby initially used Mauser actions for their long action rifles. Who provided them with actions after WW1, the interwar period...

NAMIBIA: 2022 Caprivi Buffalo Hunt - Wuparo Conservancy With Dawid Muller

Your report so much reminds me of my first sighting of a monster dagga boy i had the fortune of seeing while traveling through Caprivi in 2013. In memoriam - Professional Hunter Greg Michelson killed by Buffalo

After reading all the comments, I see no mention of a backup shot by the PH after the client's initial shot. Maybe it wasn't available, maybe in a previous discussion between client and PH, the client chose not to have the PH take one. We don't know, we weren't there. It is a moot point now...

Prepping for Africa - Shooting from sticks

Excellent practise, very similar to what I used in my African hunts. Add a couple of other practises (I used these as well and they were both beneficial). Set up your sticks on a target, then retreat a hundred yards from them, then run up to them, set up on the sticks and take your shot...

    CZ 550 American 416 Rigby

When I went for my buffalo I set up a practice exercise that I believe worked very well. I found four used 10 liter jugs, filled them with water and set them up at 100 yards, 75 yards, 50 yards and 25 yards. Then I took four shots at them, one at each jug, 100 yards off sticks, 75 yards off...
