I've only flown Qatar and Delta. That sounds ridiculous. I just got back 4 days ago. The last 5 times I always pack my bow in a duffle and pad it with clothes. I have my arrows in a tube in the same duffle along with broad heads and any other accessories. I've never ever been questioned...
Hi Adipose,
Sorry I didn't see this before I left as I would have been happy to take over those treats. I will do a report soon on both my Bushmen and Dries Visser trips. If you look back at last year you can find my trip report on African Arrow.
I plan on hunting with the top bow hunting only operations over there in the future so this is an interesting thread. I have hunted with Dries Visser multiple times and will be hunting with him again in a couple of weeks along with another trip to Bushmen Safaris who I visited in 2021. I...
Thanks for sharing. Great writeup.
"The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa- for he has so much to look forward to." Richard Mullin.
Argentina is probably one of the worst and most expensive places to get your trophies back from. My understanding is they only have two brokers that handle these over there and so they basically have the market cornered. All the added b.s charges are ridiculous. More is better over there as...
On day 8 we had some other hunters show up in camp. It was nice to have someone else to talk with and they were great people. Billy and Savanna. Billy makes his own bows and all his arrows including using flints he finds for broad heads. If he looks familiar you may have seen him on the first...
That night when we got back to the lodge Karen was nearby. I asked her if they had any luck tonight. She said yes, Tim had shot. I asked what? She said, I don't know you'd have to ask him. This was weird as Karen is not a hunter but had really gotten into this trip going to the blind...
The next morning we head out to the same blind as last night as we had seen a nice kudu there before and hopefully we would see it again for Mattie. Barb stayed in again for the morning hunt. Guess who shows up? Yep Mr buffalo. Same attitude. He would stare at the blind and just burn a...
That evening I was talking about that Cape buffalo as Barb wasn't with us in the blind that evening. Barb said you should shoot him if you see him again. I told her I wasn't set up for it. In 2019 it was my main focus. I built a specific arrow for buffalo and tipped it with a 250 grain Iron...
One evening we were sitting in a blind hoping for a kudu and a really nice Cape buffalo showed up. He owned the area as everything else gave him a wide birth. He just looked ornery! I shot one in 2019 with my bow and it definitely ranks very high in exciting hunts. One of the other PH's had...
Barb ended up shooting her giraffe at 45 yards with the crossbow. She is very excited about making rifle cases and hand bags out of it. Tim got his wildebeest.
The next day we sat a blind where we had some buffalo come in. Wind swirled and they didn't stick around but pretty cool to see. Also got a glimpse of some golden oryx. They weren't on the price list so I was surprised as this was actually my top animal on this trip but no-one previously had...
On day 2 we had a couple zebra heading our way but just stayed out of range and circled the blind. Charlee ended up taking a nice gemsbok with the crossbow. Forgot to mention that Tim had zebra, sable, blue wildebeest and waterbuck on his list and shot a zebra on day one. So lucky!
On day 1 we saw some nice animals but nothing we wanted to drop the string on. They have very high quality animals and have no sliding scale pricing which I like and is rare anymore as most outfitters seem to have adopted that pricing structure.
I really didn't have a particular hit list for this hunt and was just kind of winging it as far as what we were after. I did want the twins to get kudu if possible and the wife wanted a giraffe. After going to that taxidermy shop she was excited as they make gun cases, bags and so forth from...
The third and final stop is African Arrow Safaris. Most of my safaris have been at bow only areas and this outfitter has been on my list for a while. My goal is to visit all the top archery places in South Africa. My hunting partner Tim and his wife Karen met us on this portion of the trip.
On our last day we decided to give the klipspringer a last try on a quick morning hunt. No luck. Packed up and on to our next adventure. We stopped at this taxidermy shop in Lephalale. It was pretty incredible the volume they do. That's a pretty famous kudu that's been on various internet...
Hunted klipspringer the next day. Saw a couple females and then a male and female together. We got back on them after an hour or so. Had the male bracketed between a tree and proceeded to miss the shot. I've hunted these guys for the last few years as well and this was the first male I have...
Got to the bush pig blind at 6. At 6:59 there they are! Back to back successful nights. I hunted bush pig quite a few night in 2021 and never saw one so this is awesome. This is us celebrating our good fortune and laughing at our high jinx with the girls and the golden wildebeest.
We got back early enough to go on an afternoon hunt for klipspringer. Beautiful country but no klipspringer were spotted. Got back a little late and had to hustle to the bush pig blind. In the meantime we heard one of the twins had shot a golden wildebeest. As we are racing to the bush pig...
The next day the girls are going to hunt with Aldine in a blind with the cross bow. Dione and myself are going to another property for tssessebe. We ended up getting lucky and taking this old bull. I don't think he would of made it another 6 months. He was in terrible condition. Skin and bones.
Dione and myself get to the blind about 5pm. It's really windy which is never good. Blind is situated about 60 yards from the bait. 7pm comes and goes. No bush pigs. Dione says, how about we wait until 8 and call it. I agreed. With the wind blowing like it was it just didn't seem like...
They really know there bush pigs and bait them year round. The light comes on regardless if they are there hunting or not. They come in like clockwork at 7pm every night. The bad new is they haven't had a honey badger on the bait for 5 months. He has called around to other outfitters and...
So that was it for the first leg. We had a great time and really loved the new accommodations. We are now headed to Buffrekrall Safaris. This will be a short 4 day hunt. I'm looking for some night animals. Bushpig and Honey badger. This is a small time operation that only take one group at...
Down to the last couple of days so we break out the rifle to do some walk and stalk hunting. End up taking this impala and zebra on the second to last day and this gemsbok at last light of the last day.
We have 2 trophy impala, 2 zebra and a gemsbok remaining on the package. With the early rains gemsbok aren't coming to the water and of course zebra are always tough with a bow. My PH, Andres, always says you have to have a plan and many of them at that. He found a place where the zebra and...
On day 6 Barb took this waterbuck. I've done some walk and stalk for zebra with the bow but haven't even pulled my bow back yet. Having the best time ever watching my girls shoot.
I don't know how this ended up under the Africa Hunting forum instead of Hunting reports but maybe Jerome will move it. Anyway, the twins got into the action with the crossbow for the next couple days.
Iphone! This is the first time I didn't take my Nikon and tripod. I have found the last...
On our first hunting day it began to rain around noon. It ended up absolutely pouring down. 40 mm. in all. This would make it tough in the following days as we were for the most part bow hunting. The new grasses seemed to pop up almost immediately and there was plenty of water around for the...
Just returned a couple weeks ago from a month in Africa. Was joined by my wife and twin 16 year old girls. This was the girls 6th, 7th and 8 safaris. They have no idea how lucky they are! Used Qatar airways for the 3rd time and they were great as always. Long flight going through Doha but...
Mdwest explained it pretty well. With my 75 grain insert and the 250 grain iron will buff broadhead my FOC was right at 20%. I only used the FMJ's on the Cape Buffalo, so I don't have a ton of experience with them. I can say they flew great and put my buffalo down with one arrow so mission...
Thanks Bowhuntr64. I always appreciate your testing. I did a lot of research before building my setup for Cape buffalo in 2019. I was on the verge of going with grizzlystix arrows and Ashby broad heads. Let me say I have no skin in the game. I just wanted a combination that worked. For me...
There are plenty of bow hunters on here who have taken dangerous game with a bow, Including myself. I killed a Cape buffalo with one well placed arrow at 31 yards. It can be done if you have the right equipment and quite a number of PH's love guiding bow hunters. I can give you...
