POLL / You are going on a cape buffalo hunt in Zimbabwe... which caliber do you choose? And Why?

I've only taken one buffalo. It was on a hunt in Zimbabwe in 2010. One shot at about 50 yds with a 300 gr Barnes TSX bullet from my Rem Model 700 .375 RUM that I made for that hunt. The bullet went through his near shoulder, his lungs, and stopped in his off shoulder.

    Thoughts on Craig Boddington?

I've always enjoyed reading CB's magazine articles and seeing him on TV hunting shows, but I've only met him once... In 2017 I went on a caribou hunt in Quebec. That was the last year that non-residents were allowed to hunt caribou there. I booked a "trophy" hunt that was susposed to be 2...

Looking for more reach then my .375 ..options?

About 15 years ago I built my .375 RUM for a Cape Buffalo hunt. I took it to Africa twice, and shot a variety of animals with it from Steenbok to Buffalo and Eland. Our range only has target berms out to 430 yards. I practice with other rifles almost every week at steel out to 430 yards, and...

    All copper bullets

I started using all copper bullets in 2005 when I went on a Cape Buffalo hunt with my then new .375 RUM. New rifle, new bullets, 300 gr Barnes TSX handloaded at 2830 fps, that shot 1" 3-shot groups. On my next African hunt for just Plains Game, I loaded 270 gr Barnes TSX bullets at 3040 fps...

Need advice on scope for my first safari rifle

My first safari was in South Africa, and just plains game animals from Kudu down. On that trip I took a 7mm Rem Mag with a Weaver 3-9x40 scope with duplex crosshairs. That combo worked great on all of the animals that I hunted with it. My next safari was for Cape Buffalo and PG animals in...

    What's your one favorite caliber?

Probably my favorite caliber is .30. I shot my first elk with a .30-40 Krag. My first centerfire rifle was a .30-06 that I used for about 10 years for everything that I hunted in Colorado and Montana, from prairie dogs, deer, and antelope, to elk. In the late '70s a friend gave me a .30 Gibbs...

I have a bunch of reloaded ammo. I’m taking the africa. Does it need to be in factory boxes?

^^^^^ This ^^^^^ I believe the 11 pounds is a FAA requirement, and some countries also have their own requirements on how much ammo you can bring into their country, and some countries charge a fee for each cartridge. On my first hunt in Mozambique I brought three 20 round boxes of ammo for my...

    .375 h&h for whitetails

This old revived thread reminds me of an opposite thread that I briefly participated in on another forum. The OP of that thread had killed or two whitetails with his .223 with heavy bullets and then claimed that a .223 would be a good choice for any big game animal in the lower 48 states. I...

What trophy are you most proud of?

I didn't come from a hunting family, and I shot my first deer, a spike muley, while hunting with one of my college roommates back in 1966. I proudly hung those spike deer antlers on my college bedroom wall. Hunting again with my roommate the next year I killed my first elk, a 5x5 bull, and...

Does the price of ammo impact your choice of a rifle caliber

No, I only shoot my reloads. I've shot hundreds of rounds through my 7mm RM, .300 Wby and .375 RUM, used them on 13 international or Alaskan hunts, and have never shot a factory round through those rifles.

    Recoil reducers

As I previously posted, about 40 years ago I routed out a channel in the forend of my Browning Citori 12 ga and poured molten lead into it for a weight balance when shooting it without the smaller gauge tubes. PLAINS GAME CALIBER

I used a 7mm RM with 140 gr Nosler BT bullets on my 1st South African hunt. The PHs and Outfitter said that was too light of a bullet, but it made one shot kills on my Kudu, Black Wildebeest, and Gemsbok. In subsequent hunts I used my .375 RUM once with 300 gr Barnes TSX bullets and another...

    Thoughts on 44 Magnum

That incident was 40 years ago and I was obviously younger and probably dumber. I guess my "back up plan" would have been to draw and shoot before he got to me. Reloading Bench

When I boght my house in 1978, I built this reloading bench full length along one wall. It's got 4x4 legs and the top is 2x4 or 2x6 boards laid flat, then covered them with 1/2" high density particleboard, and topped with a low nap carpet.

    Reloading neck sizing vs crimping

The only cartridges that I crimp are the full power loads for my .357 and .44 magnum pistols. I've never had a problem, so I don't crimp any of my rifle cartridges, including loads for my 7 mm RM, .300 Wby, and .375 RUM that pushes 300 gr bullets out at 2900 fps. I use Lee collet neck size...

    375 Remington Ultra Mag

I built my .375 RUM in 2004 for an upcoming Zimbabwe Cape Buffalo hunt. It was a stainless Rem 700 BDL in a laminated stock. I like to tinker and finish my own stocks, so as soon as my rifle came I ordered a semi-inleted laminated blank from Richards. As soon as I got that blank I pillar and...

Thinking about a .300 win mag

Back in 2009, I wanted a new .30 caliber elk rifle and debated between a .300 Win mag or a .300 Wby. I only shoot my handloads, so once I get the brass, the cost per cartridge between tham is negligible. Brass for the .300 Win is more plentiful, but I chose the .300 Wby. My hunting loads for...

What one scope could you hunt anything with….

When I built my first centerfire rifle, a .30-06, in 1967 I put a cheap 3-9x40 scope on it. Over the years I upgraded the scopes, but stuck with the 3-9x40 power and size. Has anyone sucessfully mounted a wall shoulder mount to a pedestal base?

You need a higher ceiling. :( Your mount on a pedestal would bring the mount out another 6" or so from the wall.
