Hello from the Texas Hill Country!

Thanks for the clarification, and tips. It’s the Greater Kudu I’m after. For once the one I’m after is the cheaper option! lol

oh and yea, no my place is not in the anthrax area Thank God! I know several folks that are in that area and they get wiped out about every 10 years or so it seems.
You’re welcome, and glad to hear you’re not in that anthrax area.

If you weren’t aware, Cape Kudu are a type of Greater Kudu. Think Panhandle Whitetail vs Hill Country Whitetail. They tend to have a little different markings/coloration, they don’t typically get quite as big length wise (though they can), and to me always seem a little heavier/thicker on the mass side compared to similar sized/aged kudu. Sometimes to me it looks like a 48-50” Cape Kudu is thicker and heavier than a mid 50’s from Limpopo or other area.

You’ve got plenty of time to ask questions, read, go to DSC, SCI, or HSC and plan. Good luck on your journey down the rabbit holes. There’s a lot of us from Texas here.

Welcome to AH! i've traveled from Phoenix to Austin and College Station to visit friends and family and have flew thru Sonora more times than I can count now. I say flew thanks to those high speed limits. I've probably seen more deer than people in that part of Texas.

You've come to the right place for information on hunting Africa and you're smart to start your research now instead of after you booked your first trip unlike so many of us have including yours truly.

Again welcome to our forum.

Welcome to AH ColinR!

Welcome to the forum!

Feel free to send us a message and look at our website.

We hunt both the southern greater in Limpopo as well as the cape kudu in our cape hunting areas. In the northern cape we hunt in excess of 32,000 acres low fence with lots of plains game and can accommodate all the species you are after and many more. Since it is a sheep farm we more than happy for you to hunt as many jackal as you possibly can as they do a lot damage to the sheep.

It is great that you are starting your plans so far ahead! There is wealth of knowledge on this forum and always some amazing specials that pop up from great outfitters all over the continent.

All the best!

Good Day Sir.
Welcome to the AH Forum,
Please check out our website www.game4africa.co.za
We have packages on there which include East Cape Kudu.

Kind Regards

Hello ColinR
We can certainly accommodate you and your family.
We have all the species you mentioned including very good kudu.
Each year we harvest at least 3 to 4 kudu bulls in the 58 + inch range.
Rest of the animals - no problem either.
Jackals shoot as much as you want for free.
Can do night hunting also.

A package hunt will probably work out cheaper if you add up the daily rates and animals.
You can always change the package if there is one animal you do not want / or like you get a credit for that animals and can use the credit towards a different specie.

See attached our E-Brochure and Price list with 4 different packages listed.

Sincerely
Hans de Klerk

Welcome aboard!

Hello everyone. I’m a life long hunter, hunting all kinda of game here in Texas. I manage a decent size place in Sonora, TX where we have deer, axis, black bucks, and a few other random exotics that pass through. I'm married and have a 14 year old son who is just as obsessed with hunting as I am. We are both fortunate that my wife doesn't complain much about our hunting. Last year we hunted elk in Colorado and absolutely loved it.

I'm thinking about booking an African Safari for my son and I as a graduation gift, which is still 4 years away so I have plenty of time to research and book. My wife will most likely go too as an observer.

My #1 bucket list animal is a Kudu! Then from there is a Warthog, Nyala, Blue or black Wildebeest, Gemsbok, and Jackel.

One of my biggest questions is on the Kudu. My understanding is there are Greater Kudu and lesser Kudu, but lots of outfitters list East Africa Kudu. Are those Greater or Lesser, or something else? I hear people say, the best place for giant Kudu is Botswana. But is that still a good place for a first time trip? Still have good numbers of the other animals were after? I guess that’s why I’m here, to start researching these questions .
Welcome to AH from a neighbor. (Water Valley)
You will learn a lot here in AH. You will likely be taking your son on a package hunt in South Africa for your first safari. This is going to be the most economical. Botswana does Have big Kudu and I have two friends here now hunting.
Lesser Kudu is in Tanzania and those hunts are in the neighborhood of $100,000.

Wow, thank you everyone for the big warm welcome! I greatly appreciate each reply and will be looking into everything you all have posted and suggested.

I absolutely can not wait to get over there.

Good morning and welcome to the forum from a fellow Texan. We have hunted Namibia and South Africa two times each and we thoroughly enjoy hunting plains game. Although all of our trips have been wonderful, we prefer Namibia for big plains game and entry/exit is similar to flying in/out of a regional airport in Texas.

Safe hunting.

Welcome aboard fellow Texan! As many have said there is tons of information here to plan and you have time (4 years). I took my son in 2023 to S. Africa when he was 14 and just got back from Namibia last week where I was hunting with a friend (hunt report still pending).

As you comb through the information here, besides just the size of Kudu, etc... I recommend paying attention to all the details such as drive time to hunting areas each day, is everything you want on one property, type of accommodations, malaria free or not, and about twenty other detailed due diligence questions (all on this site).

Personally, based on the two hunts I mention above I would take a hard look at Namibia. I enjoyed S. Africa but I enjoyed Namibia more. Last comment, I would not penny pinch on any factor, it will not be worth it and may very well backfire. A slightly lower trophy fee / day rate at one place vs. another should not be a deciding factor at all in my opinion. Happy to discuss more if you want to. Cheers

Good day! Welcome to AH from our side too!

No lies!
Me and my mates hunt Eland on a farm a few spots down from you, he doesnt hunt the Kudu and they have become cocky and massive !
I know his nephew or second cousin or some wierd relation and we are getting invited to hunt Kudu there sometime soon.
Epic stuff.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….
