    Hats on safari

I wear a wide brim hat on most of my outdoor adventures not because it's fashionable, but because I take care of my skin. Two years ago I had MOHS surgery to remove a large patch of skin cancer from my right temple about the size of a quarter. Not especially painful, but it did leave a nasty...

Recommendations for a range revolver in .38 Special

Have you considered a model 10? If it's something that family members will shoot often, the smaller grip might be a good idea. In any case, a good revolver just isn't really mine until I've found a nice set of cocobolo grips for it. ;)

    Politics

I understand how old it is in principle. My point was that left wing pundits cry about 1 thing done by Republicans, but forget the 100 things done before and after that by Democrats.

    Politics

Patently false, and a common Democrat tactic. Democrat majorities in Congress, as well as Democrat Presidents have passed plenty of laws that violate the Constitutional Rights of Americans before and after Reagan. These include, but are not limited to asset forfeiture laws. THIS is what I refer...

    Hunting in fog

I've noticed the same thing myself, especially eastern Whitetails. If the corn is still standing and you have a calm foggy morning, that's the best time to put the sneak on them. ;) The only time I can really think of being forced to wait out the fog is if your only option is to locate...

    New Weatherby Rifle

I'm with you on this. Very nice looking rifle. In some ways Weatherby rifles, along with the Colt/Sauer and Golden Eagle rifles were great looking when toned down just a tad. Graceful lines, but a bit shiny for my taste. Semi gloss on both wood and metal actually added to the beauty in my...

    Merkel double .375 value?

Have a good friend that asked me what this rifle is worth, and if he should buy or not. I have never seen this rifle other than the pictures he sent. The story is the owner bought it some time ago planning on someday going to Africa, but passed before that happened. NIB never fired, paid 20k...

Understanding The Phenomenon Of Jacket-Core Separation

I've seen plenty of what some might describe as a failed projectile, but often still resulted in a rapid kill, sometimes not so rapid. Broadheads that snapped in half when even light bone was struck, bullets that expanded to wide, to rapidly and failed to penetrate vital organs, etc. Even one...

Good news. The rifle is still available and comes with a set of RCBS dies. Bad news. The gun store owner informed me that the remaining brass and ammo were separated from the rifle and sold.

Dakota 76 in 330 Dakota buy or pass

I'll stop by tomorrow and snap some pics. I'd like some opinions here on exactly what it is. If my memory is correct, most of these had Douglas barrels 23 or 24 inches long, island style iron sights not a quarter rib, ebony for end tip, barrel band sling swivel, semi gloss bluing. This does...

Dakota 76 in 330 Dakota buy or pass

Exactly what I was thinking. I haven't seen a box of Dakota ammo in any caliber for quite a few years, nor brass for that matter. If it had been chambered in a common caliber I would have walked out the door with it.

Dakota 76 in 330 Dakota buy or pass

Like most of us, I need another rifle like I need a hole in my foot. Problem is my local gun shop just bought an Estate firearms collection with a 330 Dakota rifle. Typical Dakota 76 with high grade wood, beautiful checkering, Talley QD mounts, plus 200 once fired cases and several boxes of...

    Recommended Ammo for .375 H&H?

I like the idea of using the factory 300 grain Barnes X for everything. The ammo is available for a reasonable cost, seems to give excellent accuracy in a wide variety of rifles, doesn't require any trajectory variables that you might have with different bullets weights, and best of all, it does...

450 Rigby and whether to scope or not?

I had the same decision to make for my 450 Rigby build. Mine should feel like an Olympic barbell in its final configuration, so recoil won't be as big of a factor as it would be with a light rifle. Anything with a large field of view and 4 inches of eye relief should work. My two choices were...

Wanted Norma 257 Roberts Factory Loaded Ammunition

I have the same problems getting brass and ammo for Tina's.257 Roberts. The only brass in 7x57 that I've been able to find is PPU, and when I'm out of the Hornady and Nosler brass that I have now, that will be my go to for forming ammo. Both Hornady and Nosler produce small batches of ammo...

I probably have 20 Leupold scopes with the Fire Dot. VXR's, VX3's, VX5's, and VX6's. I have them on rimfires, crossbows, muzzle loaders, hunting rifles and even a new match rifle, just because I like it so much. Once you hunt with it, going back to solid black crosshairs just isn't an option.

These are a couple of Pronghorns taken in Wyoming a few years ago. Tina and I both have the CDS dial on our scopes. Wild hog meat… do you eat it or is it too risky?

You are correct, if you've smelled an old Boar filled with testosterone, you pretty much know that's how it's going to taste.

Wild hog meat… do you eat it or is it too risky?

Wild hog meat… do you eat it or is it too risky?

Not the ones I've shot. Several large Florida Boar hogs that myself and other family members shot went 250-300lbs, and you could smell them before you saw them. They were on ice within 90 minutes of being put down, dressed properly, and cooked in a variety of ways, and the meat still smelled and...

Wild hog meat… do you eat it or is it too risky?

As others have stated, younger hogs less than 150lbs should be fine, but any boar larger than that usually isn't fit for human consumption. I've had plenty of Florida hogs that tasted great, but pressure canning is the only way I know of to kill any little nasties. Here is a great video on how...
