1 MOA accuracy less common than you think ?

These are hunting rifles so the exact distance doesn't really matter. The available land to shoot allows us 650 yds. There are targets set up at 300 and 500 as well. Generally, the longer the better when it comes to load dev for long range rifles, assuming you can mitigate wind effects. We...

1 MOA accuracy less common than you think ?

I personally shoot 1000 yd BR competitions. I have multiple 1000 yd 10-shot groups in the 4-6" range. I have a couple that are under 4". That is a 30lb purpose build rifle whose only goal is to shoot small groups and high scores at 1000 yds. I have never shot this rifle at close range...

    458 Cal Bullets

Getting out of the 45 Cal bolt gun game. These numbers are accurate to the best of my knowledge. I did hand count all the open boxes. The Hornady bullets are not bonded so I have priced them appropriately. They would make good practice loads. 500 DGX 50 500 DGS 100 500 RN 45 450 TSX 198...

    M-70 Classic Stainless & Pre 64 300 AI

No. That's why I sold it. However, they usually shoot around 300 Wby velocities. Nowadays I would recommend 300 PRC as an all around 30 cal. It is the most popular 30 cal we build. They usually will shoot a 215 Berger around 2900 FPS from a 22" barrel.

Charlie sent me a PM at 6:47 AM Pacific Time saying he would take it IF I could wait for payment. That is a conditional offer. Woodsman made me a firm offer at 7:17 AM Pacific Time. I got in touch with Woodsman and made the deal. Charlie then said he would take it at 10:04 Pacific Time...

These are two more from my personal collection. These are rifles I bought for various reasons and have not shot them. Shipping and insurance will be $100 per rifle to the lower 48 US via FedEx. Just to avoid any confusion, and I certainly don't want to get crossways with anyone here. I am too old for that. @woodsman1991 was the first to offer to buy. He did this via PM and we made the deal. I had two other members make inquiries before woodsman1991 made his inquiry, but...

Leopard Hunting Accident Involving Craig Boddington's Daughter

Let me get this straight. CB was not at the hunt where the incident occurred. Even so, he sold some of his own rifles to donate money, and even mentioned one of them was a new Rigby Double 500. This info is in posts 19 and 21. Additionally, the Boddington's organized a fundraiser to raise...

    Savage's Floating Bolt Head

Again, the only advantage to a Savage is its cost. The barrel nut is okay, but not superior to a shouldered barrel. I have fit barrels to Savages, and to be honest I don't like how they headspace. Headspace isn't as precisely controlled as with a shouldered barrel. I guess I didn't remember...

    Savage's Floating Bolt Head

The Savage 110 is a budget grade rifle that definitely fills a need. It shoots well for what it is. However, the floating bolt head is not an accuracy enhancing feature. When the rifle fires, the case stretches from the shoulder to the bolt face. If it's a floating bolt head, there has to...

    Savage's Floating Bolt Head

I shoot in a discipline where we make no compromises in our equipment. In this discipline, we shoot the most precision rifles made, bar none. The discipline is long range bench rest. While I see lots of BAT actions, some Kelly's, and on rare occasion a Defiance; none use a floating bolt head...

CZ 550 458 lott doubts for bell and carlson stock

    Toughest Scope: Trijicon? Leopold? Others?

The only way we know for sure that a scope doesn't shift its reticle when firing is by using a scope checker. That allows us to mount a fixed scope side by side with the scope we are checking, shoot, and check for shift. Again, most scopes--even very expensive scopes--do have some reticle...

    Toughest Scope: Trijicon? Leopold? Others?

The 6x42 shifted initially then held. The SWFA 2.5-10 had shift. If anyone is interested I can PM the link to this test. I think I can get him to test more scopes. Also, we are kind of assuming that if one passes or fails to test that they all will. That is probably generally true, but...

    Toughest Scope: Trijicon? Leopold? Others?

Bringing up a slightly old thread. Over the last few years I have leaned a bunch about scope reliability. Probably 15 - 20 years ago I though I had settled on my optics. I liked whatever version of Leupold's VX-3 series that fit what I was doing. They were lightweight, seemed durable, and I...

CZ 550 458 lott doubts for bell and carlson stock

I am one of those strangely believing people. :) While these stocks--and I have several--shoot well enough as is, they are indeed improved with bedding. The bedding blocks often are not straight and when the action screws are tightened then stress is introduced into the stock. That stress...

    LOP for Rapid Bolt Operation

All this makes sense. What most of you are saying is that there is no need to do rapid bolt gun firing. This means I don't have to change decades of how I have been operating a bolt rifle. I shoot, cycle the bolt as I lower the rifle while keeping my eyes on the target, and then immediately...

    LOP for Rapid Bolt Operation

I saw that thread and video, but I didn't see anyone really address shortening the stock until you can run it fast. All the typical discussion seems to be how heavy recoiling rifles need a longer pull.
  34. I

    LOP for Rapid Bolt Operation

I have been searching and haven't really found this addressed. Almost all my hunting rifles have 13.5ish LOPs. They are all very comfortable to shoot with that LOP. However, I can't work the bolt rapidly with the rifle at my shoulder and maintain sight picture with that LOP. I am working...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

So several here have talked about liking heavy bullets regardless of construction. Now again, I haven't kept up with Africa trends, but several years ago the thought was that an expanding mono should be lighter weight, and at that lighter weight it would out penetrate a heavier bonded lead or...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

I can shoot them all well. It's more of an issue of being proficient with running the bolt, and the M-70 seems better than the CZ for that. I can easily make one of my M-70s into a Lott. Unless the CZ with a shorter pull and longer bolt knob is a better idea? Another big question I have is...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

Yes, I too only suspect that as well, as I haven't ever tried to shoot anything with heavy recoil from prone. I think best way to handle heavy recoil is to have the torso upright and then let the recoil push us back. Hunched over into a rifle on the bench is another way to not shoot a...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

One thing I do know from the hunting and competition shooting I have done is that what looks good on paper does t always translate to what works best in the field/at the range. That's why I am asking all these new guy questions because I am sure there are a bunch here who have actual...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

The world has definitely changed when I started toying with the 416s 20 years ago. Now I thought the argument for the 350 TSX and TTSX over a 400 grain controlled expansion bullet was the mono retained weight much better, so although it starts out with less weigh on impact it ends up with more...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

I am assuming the long range craze has also crept into plains game, which usually means shooting prone. I have no issue with 50-70 ft lbs of recoil when seated at a bench, standing or kneeling; but I won't shoot anything with remotely that much recoil when prone. Then again, PG will only be my...

Deciding on Which Rifle to Use

I have been assuming that the 416 Rem works as well as the Lott for a client rifle. Is that wrong? I could easily bring a 338 something along with the buffalo rifle. I currently have a 33-28 Nosler that shoots 338 RUM velocities. I just ran a 33 Nosler reamer in another .120". I could...

I flew C-130s, T-38s, T-1s--in that order. Ended up with two C-130 tours, two T-1 tours, one T-38 tour, and a couple of staff tours. The closest I got to a fighter was my T-38 IP tour, but I did hold my own against an F-15 pilot one day when they let us take two T-38s solo--which was rare as...
