With hippo I was thinking more so on land where a body shot or two may be required.
I've heard that when hunting hippo in water the front of their skull isn't actually that thick and that a well placed 375 will do the job.
For those that have been fortunate enough to hunt either of these species, what was your preferred caliber of choice for the hunt?
It sounds the .416s are ideal for Cape Buffalo and 0.458 and .50cal for Elephant. What about Hippo and Rhino?
Is a .416 enough gun for either or is more...
My name is Northern Shooter and I have a problem, I haven't yet hunted Africa and need to remedy that.
I'm recently retired (late 30s) and have caught the Africa bug. It all started with my 375HH which I refer to as the perfect gateway drug.
I've since added a 416 Rigby, a 458 WinMag and am...
As a prospective Dangerous Game hunter, I'd love to hear about your first dangerous game hunt.
Everything from the early planning stages to the execution of the hunt, to the kill shot and the taxidermy and trophy export.
So a few questions:
1. What' made you want to initially hunt dangerous...
Yeah you can definately go down this rabbit hole. I'm personally running the following:
Deer hunting - 12 gauge (for shotgun only WMU, under 100m), for rifle areas, over 100m I'm using either my 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser or Model 70 Featherweight in 308.
Black Bear - From a blind I'm using my...
I prefer one unique rifle and cartridge for every different big game species in North America.
Need a deer gun, elk gun. Moose gun, sheep gun, goat gun, black bear gun, brown bear gun, bison gun and so on.
I inquired at a retailer this week regarding new Merkel's.
Was told the wait time is 12-18 months for delivery and it would cost around $22,000-$25,000 Canadian.
Which is pretty crazy considering the last time I saw a new Merkel 500 listed in stock (2022) it was listed for less than $9000...
I've been referencing the Sheep & Goat lists on the Grand Slam Clubs OVIS/Capra awards here.
Ovis - https://grandslamclub.org/awards/ovis-worldslam/
Capra - https://grandslamclub.org/awards/capra-world-slam/
I wasn't familiar with the majority of these species before, great resource.
So I'm compiling a list of various options for international mountain hunts, any species or regions that should be added to the below that stand out as great value?
1. New Zealand - Tahr, chamois, wild goat.
2. Kyrgistan/ Tajikistan - Marco Polo Sheep and Ibex
3. Romania - Chamois
4. Croatia...
The more I look into this the more international options I come across. All the different variations of chammis, mouflon, ibex species, as well as the tahr.
Looks like a good chunk of these hunts take place in the middle east/Asia but also across most of co tinentak Europe through the Alps.
I've been looking into both guided sheep and goat hunts here in Canada and they are far pricier than your typical deer or bear hunt.
Which international destinations offer a better value for hunting a sheep or goat species without having to spend $100,000 CDN?
Preferences in Europe or Oceania.
I remember reading that on here a while ago. I don't imagine this wait time has decreased at all since then?
I wonder what the typical turn-around times are from Merkel, Krieghoff, Chapuis etc.
I'm planning on buying a rifle off a shelf at a retail store (assuming it fits right) so I...
Perfect, I'll put in my offer now and see if they'll accept 1/10th of the list price haha.
I'm definitely only considering the "affordable" German and French doubles that don't cost as much as an exotic supercar.
I hadn't really considered an O/U configuration for this purchase, are many available in 500N/E? You never seem to see O/U doubles hunted with in Africa based on what I've been seeing here.
Haha yeah I was going to include that. Just wasn't sure if they were the price of a Corvette or a Ferrari these days. I know most, if not all would be well into the 6 figures USD.
I have recently decided to add a DR to the collection for my next purchase and have begun acquiring 500NE ammo for my preferred caliber choice.
One thing I have been having trouble with is determining what these double rifles are actually going for new from the manufacturers, as they don't all...
So one that that has become very apparent here in Canada is that when looking at the >0.5cal DG cartridges, 500NE is the only one that be found in stock regarding factory ammo.
In the last 3 years that I've been interested in these kinds of firearms, I've never once come across factory 500J or...
It's hard to see a case for it today given we already have options at Standard, Magnum and Magnum+ lengths.
Ruger is already offering their M77 line in 416 Ruger so I can't see them offering the Taylor, unless the 416 Ruger was completely phased out of production.
I'm intrigued by these VC rifles but I've literally never seen one in stock in Canada, don't even know who the importer would be. How do they compare pricewise compared to Merkel and Heym?
It would do the job.
If 6.5 Creedmoor's and 6.5 PRC's can take a brown bear, so will a 6.8 Western. With a S.D, 0.326 it has every 30.06 load beat aside from the 220 grains. It outperforms every .308 and 30.06 load in terms of muzzle energy and carries that energy downrange far more...
While I would love to have a 89B they seem to be far above my price point, roughly 30-40k CDN.
I do like the Germanic lines on the 88 as well.
I'm also leaning more towards the 500NE because nothing says special with a .510.
Ballistically it sets itself apart from my 458 moreso than the 470NE...
I'm looking at both new production Merkel 140AE/160AE as well as the Krieghoff Classic Big V. Considering 470/500NE for the above.
Also looking at a used Heym 88B PH in 500NE (sorry don't know the model year but I've included the link below).
https://ellwoodepps.com/heym-88b-ph.html
Is there any particular resource that lists what loads each double has been regulated with for specific production years? I haven't been able to find this.
I'm open to all options. I get the impression that my budget will buy a much nicer bolt action than a double rifle but I'd still be extremely happy with a Merkel DR or similar.
I'm buying this as a reward for early retirement.
I'd like to thank the AH community for helping me spend my money on my last three DG rifle choices including a 375H&H, 416 Rigby and 458 WinMag.
I'm looking to add one final thumper to the collection and would like to make it special one. My initial thought is to go with a double rifle as they...
I found a local reloading site with component prices.
The cheapest I'm seeing for bullets is the 350 grain Speers $1.21 ea, the Barnes 400 gr TSX are $2.38ea and the Hornady 400gr DGX are $2.78ea.
I'm not seeing any 416 brass cases listed but I have over 100 factory rounds (Sako, Hornady &...
I'm new to reloading but would like to start with 416 Rigby to reduce the cost of feeding this rifle. I've been paying approximately $12/round (Canadian) for factory ammo.
If I were to buy all components today, what would the approximate cost per round work out to?
Just to put some comparative numbers to this discussion on penetration:
700 NE - 1,000 grain - Section Density of .292
600 NE - 900 grain - Sectional Density of .334
577 NE - 750 grain - Sectional Density of .313
500 NE - 570 grain -Sectional Density of .313
.458 cal - 500 grain - Sectional...
So I decided to play around with some of the variables using this ballistics calculator (https://shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php).
Starting with the following variables as my baseline:
Bullet Weight: 400 gr
Bullet Velocity: 2,000 FPS
Powder Charge Weight: 100gr
Rifle Weight: 10lbs...
So what seems to be the largest contributor to felt recoil? Powder charge? Velocity? Projectile weight? Max pressure? I know it's a combination of all of the above but curious if one input contributes more than the others.
Where are the physicists here?
Same category animals count towards the Super Slam, how far are you into that?
I plan on having a few "duplicates" as well in my journey.
1. White Tail & Mule Deer
2. Black Bear and Brown Bear
3. Mountain Caribou and Barren Ground Caribou.
I'd love to hunt multiple sheep but I'm still...
I'm curious if anyone has shot the 416 Rigby back to back to back with the 416 RemMag and 416 Ruger and could comment on if there is any perciebable difference between them? The 416 Ruger has what, 20 grains less than the Rigby?
I had my 3 guns out for a shoot last weekend. My CZ in 375, my Model 70 in 458 WM and My CZ in 416 with the B and C stock.
The 416 kicks less than the 458 WM shooting Hornady DGX but the CZ weighs atleast a pound heavier with rings and scope.
It would be interesting to shoot a 458 Lott in the...
