While reading this thread, my thoughts went to what I currently have in my stable that would be great for these smaller species but still able to reach out there if needed with accuracy.
I have a load for my 243 Win I worked up using the Barnes 80 gr TTSX bullet.
I think that would be a great...
Hunted with Africa Maximum Safaris this past August and the 4 of us in camp hunting Buffalo all took very nice buffs.
Below is a photo of mine. Huge bosses and with only 2 teeth left in his mouth they estimated he was 14 years old.
I archery hunted black bear in northern Saskatchewan years ago up near Lake Athabaska. They have great bears up there for sure.
Best of luck to you on your hunt!
I am a Barnes fan and am partial to them based on the performance they have shown in several different calibers.
Specifically in my 7mm RUM I have shot the 160 gr Barnes TSX in plains game with wonderful results.
My favorite bullet is the 145 gr Barnes LRX and if Barnes would have had this...
I have only hunted July and August. I liked August the best as there seemed to be a little better visibility when stalking. Either month is great, however.
If DG is not on the menu then I take what I use here in the US which is my Remington 700 SS in 7mm RUM. I shoot Barnes bullets exclusively in it, hand loaded for the game I am hunting. For example, the last hunt for PG I worked up a load using the 160 gr Barnes TSX. It worked great.
Since then...
Tred Barta. Now that’s a name I have not thought about in a long time. Last I remember didn’t he go through some serious health issues? I don’t remember the name of his tv show but I remember him being a hell of a tuna fisherman. Was also fun to watch him hunt with his longbow.
Taurus Judge, 2 3-4 inch .410 shells or 45 LC. Great snake dispatcher and I have owned one for years. When I lived and hunted in South Texas I always had it in me when in the brush.
I jumped on the 7mm RUM bandwagon in about 2003 and it has been my main big game rifle ever since. I have enough brass and components to last me a lifetime. I also have a bunch of factory ammo I bought when the brass started getting hard to source. I will never run out of ammo for it and when I...
I have worn about all of them over the years but my boots of choice today are Anderson Bean’s and Luchesse.
When I am out in the country in the warmer months, sometimes I will wear my Tony Lama snake boots.
I shot Core-Lokt 45 years ago out of my 270 Win, right up until I started reloading.
Have never shot one since after discovering much better bullets over the years.
My first experience with fresh cheese curds in Wisconsin many years ago when on a business trip made me think I had died and gone to heaven! That squeak on your teeth and warm buttery texture was a real delight. Couple that with some good sausage and your tongue will slap your forehead!
My...
For me, the type of terrain is going to dictate my boot.
On a plains game safari where the terrain was most sandy soil and softer dirt, I wore Merrell mid hikers. They are pretty popular here in the US as an all around hiking boot with a fairly soft sole.
For my hunt last August I was after...
My 385 H&H using a 300 gr Barnes traveling at 2475 gps at the muzzle drops 20 inches at 300 yards at 6000 ft elevation and sighted in dead on at 100 yards.
I wish I had at least the pictures of the two bullets we took out of my Buffalo from this past August. Unfortunately, security in Joberg confiscated them. Long story I won’t go into here.
Anyway, they were Barnes 300 gr TSX hand loads that I worked up using RL15 powder. The muzzle velocity on...
I live in Wyoming where we have high numbers of grizzlies in certain parts of the state. I also hunt, camp and recreate in those areas and while there I carry a Glock 29 with an extended mag and it rides in a Kenai chest holster. I load it with Underwood extreme performance ammunition.
It works...
Exactly. Nice thing about these cases is you can take out foam layers to adjust to what you want to carry besides just your ammo. I use mine at home a lot as well for when I go out hunting and will even put my pistol etc in it and throw it in my kayak when I go out fishing since it is...
Here is what I do. 40 rounds of 375 H&H in a SKB waterproof case. I have not weighed the case but my guess it is well shy of 2 pounds. If needed I could take another layer of foam out and put in more ammo, knife, binos etc.
This is all you need to do. Lock it up, put it in your checked baggage...
When I first went to Africa on a plains game hunt I had heard from many sources including my outfitter to use a 180 gr bullet.
I was planning on using my Rem 700 in 7mm RUM. It has a 9.5 twist barrel.
Wanting to use Barnes bullets, I called Barnes and spoke to their technical people and was told...
The only reason I picked up some empty factory boxes from Barnes is because I had a CBP officer tell me some airlines will be sticklers about ammo being in original boxes. Rather than give them any reason to be unreasonable, I just took that option away.
Geez, on my way back last August when...
I reload so I did not have factory boxes. I called Barnes and asked them if they would send me a few empty factory boxes for 375 H&H 300 gr TSX and they gladly did so.
I put my reloads in the factory boxes and then put those in my lockable ammo case.
Easy to do with no questions asked.
Some great Bushbuck posted here. Congratulations! Bushbuck is the one species that has eluded me this far. I think they are the coolest looking animal and will definitely go back to try and get one.
Muzzle up in my Liberty safe.
Regarding oil seeping into the wood, I don’t give my guns an oil bath. I will put a little oil in the needed places and then a very light coat using one of those gun oil wipes and then wipe off any kind of excess.
I live in a very dry climate so I don’t have to...
I enjoyed the show Johan Cowlitz, PH was on. Can’t remember the show but he was always good to watch.
Agree with you on J Alain Smith. I enjoyed watching him. Don’t know what he does for a living but he sure lives to spend a lot of time and money hunting Buffalo!
It is also interesting that in using the older Barnes load data, which is what I use, and comparing it to the latest data they have published for the 375 H&H, there is a pretty significant difference in what they show for the 300 gr using RL15. In their current data, while they still highly...
You would not be disappointed at all with the Barnes 160 gr TSX in your 7 mag. That is what I loaded and shot for my first plains game safari and that bullet flat hammered 13 plains game species from Kudu and Gemsbok in down.
I worked up a load for my 375 H&H using the Barnes 300 gr TSX and 67 gr of RL15. It chronographs at 2475fps here at my elevation of just under 6000 feet in elevation.
It is extremely accurate in my Win Model 70.
Funny thing is if you look at the Barnes loading data, 67 gr of RL15 is on the...
