In praise and defense of Wood & Blue

Same here. Walnut stocks & blued steel just feels different in one’s hands. I’ve got absolutely nothing against synthetic stocks or stainless steel barrels, but they can never even remotely match the traditional beauty of an old school firearm. My Churchill Gun Makers Model Deluxe in 7x57mm...

    Bertram Brass Quality?

There are too many independent negative reports out there for me to deny that they certainly had some issues with quality control in the past. That said, I’ve personally found both their .425 Westley Richards and .600 Nitro Express brass to be quite excellent.

    2024 Double Rifle MSRP's?

A James Purdey & Sons .600 Nitro Express sidelock ejector starts at £191,500 (no extras). But don’t worry. It’s still going to be mine, someday… as soon as I find a way to rob the National Bank. By comparison, a Holland & Holland Royale .600 Nitro Express sidelock ejector costs “Only” £179,000.

Life Goes On A Gorilla Hunt

Nothing against hunting primates on principle, @Datchew If a lone bull gorilla was hunted (for instance: the manner by which we hunt lions or leopards on bait), then I would see absolutely nothing wrong with the hunt. But I simply can't stomach the concept of decimating an entire gorilla...

What will Big 5 hunting look like in 20 yrs?

Difficult to say, because there are many wild cards at play. By most accounts, you won’t be able to bring your trophies back (or at least as easily as you still can). But seeing countries like Botswana & Namibia remain defiant towards Western “Big Brother” type governments & their anti hunting...

6-Bore Muzzle Loader ... Anyone Know, Ganyana, African Hunter Magazine?

Ganyana/Don Heath tragically breathed his last in 2015. He was a true treasure trove of knowledge. Historically, three hunters have been documented as using 6 bores- Gordon Cumming (“A Dutch Rifle Carrying Six To The Pound”) Hottentot Cigar (“A Heavy Old 6 Bore Muzzle Loader”) Jan Viljoen A...

Proper Dangerous Game Rifle followup when the client can't followup?

More than a few white hunters feel uncomfortable about a tracker carrying a firearm and accompanying them during a high stress situation like following up dangerous game. The white hunter feels more “In Control” of the whole situation if he is the only one armed. The rationale is that the...

    A Double in .458 win?

I would personally try to stay away from rimless cartridges (especially high pressure ones like the .458 Winchester Magnum) in a double rifle. In hot African places (like the Kalahari or Zambezi Valley or Rift Valley), these high pressure rimless cartridges tend to frequently get jammed in the...

Welcome To The Wonderful World Of BSA

I couldn't agree more, Bobby. They put an integral muzzle brake on a .22 Hornet. What were they thinking ?! Clearly, someone at the factory had become imbalanced. If you need a muzzle brake to tame the recoil of a .22 Hornet, then firearms are not for you !

Solid bullets for Buffalo? Yes or No?

Dear Masai, From 1974-1993, my preferred setup (in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum magazine rifles and a .458 Winchester Magnum double rifle on one occasion) was an RWS 300Gr Kegelspitze soft point for the first shot… followed by RWS (and later Remington after 1982) 300Gr round nosed steel...

How do you guys handle ear protection whilst on safari?

I always use ear plugs when practicing. But during the hunt itself, I may or may not wear them (depending upon circumstance). During a dangerous game hunt, I don’t wear them. And certainly not while following up wounded game. I find that under the excitement of game shooting, the noise doesn’t...

Welcome To The Wonderful World Of BSA

Today, when most younger generations of hunters think of British firearms... they conjure up images in their minds of bespoke gun houses such as James Purdey & Sons or Westley Richards. Exclusively hunting with Winchester cartridges?

Doable, yes. But why limit yourself needlessly on a whim ? With the .458 Winchester Magnum & fresh hand loads/custom loads that are loaded to at least 2100 FPS… you’ve got nothing to worry about against the Big Five. If you reduce the bullet weight to 450Gr-480Gr while accomplishing a velocity...
