Some gun nuts make the rifle and ballistic part of a hunting trip into something spicy, like a good starter to a fantastic main meal.
Others have a palate cleansing plain old Sorbet before the main.
This is the .308, Vanilla.
It will work without any mess or fuss.
For this I will just go with which ever one you shoot the most accurately. Sub MOA shooting to point of aim is better than anything with small animals where you are not worried about meat damage.
Thats almost quite hard to believe.
That goes against everything I have seen in the field with people using Oryx bullets.
Yes they are soft and open up all the time, but always penetrate well.
Heck it even turns my 6.5 into an Eland worthy caliber (156gr Oryx is AMAZING)
If you are actually going to go through all the trouble to bring in a dedicated rifle for these small animals, why not bring something that is pefect for the job?
.223 is used simply because it is common, not because it is ideal. Its way too fast.
In a suitable accurate bolt action rifle...
No lies!
Me and my mates hunt Eland on a farm a few spots down from you, he doesnt hunt the Kudu and they have become cocky and massive !
I know his nephew or second cousin or some wierd relation and we are getting invited to hunt Kudu there sometime soon.
Epic stuff.
Hunting in South Africa?
So if you look in the large stores in the big metro areas (Johannesburg, Pretoria) you will find 300 PRC.
A whole batch of Howa rifles were imported in this caliber , components too.
So in a pinch you will be sorted at Safari and Outdoor who currently have ELD-X from...
I goto Kruger, hunt all over Limpopo and only take precautions when going north in Mozambique.
The chances of getting it in Limpopo is probably 0.001%
You have more chance of bad side effects of the products.
I have not heard of cases in Limpopo unless you are right up by Crooks Corner in Kruger.
If you are hunting in the more common western Limpopo, dont bother.
And no , a 686 is not a different profile Model 19.
The K frame has the same grip dimensions of the L frame but the L is beefed up in many areas to handle 357 magnum. Look at the forcing cone as a dead giveaway, the K frame has flat cut on the bottom to allow the crane to fit the compact...
Just by the way, people saying that Taurus are old S&W revolvers have never opened both of these up and had a look.
They are very different mechanically, the only thing they have in common is clockwise cylinder rotation and that they are 6 shot revolvers.
I wont slam a Taurus but they are...
Now revolvers are one of my passions. Only S&W.
I would certainly get a S&W K-frame with adjustable sights.
Either a Target Masterpiece (Model 14) in 6" or a Combat Masterpiece (Model 15 or 67) with a 4" barrel.
Other options are heavy barrel Model 10 or 64. (Blue or Stainless)
I would...
To me its always been about powder volume. 60-70gr in medium sized cases does not need a magnum primer.
When you start loading 80gr you need more to set it off.
My opinion, and I'm not sure what that line really is.
Good South African option is to use PPU once fired brass with Somchem S335 launching any 286gr bullet you can find. Im my case this year its Hornady Interlock.
Its very simple.
The No 1 is a falling block of the type most used by British gumakers.
It has to be .303
.275 is second choice and only then if you use proper headstamped ammo.
If you take a Mauser action then shoot 7x57.
Me and my mates mostly hunt Eland for meat and the last most recent one shot was with a 6.5CM and shitty 140gr S&B ammo.
It was a young female though, barely over 100kg dressed.
The most common size shot is a fair sized female at around 200kg dressed and from here on up you start needing...
But the Grendel shoots much lighter bullets than other 6.5's so not really in the same class.
Its the ideal Impala rifle, taking the crown over the 6x45 and maybe the 7.62x39 that used to be the sweet spot.
My friend has a Howa that he turned the barrel down on and fitted a carbon fibre stock...
I dont even think the 7.62x39 has caught up to the .303 at this point. You have no idea of the scale of .303 that is/was out there.
Even if a person fights with an AK there is usually a Lee Enfield and ammo lying around somewhere to hunt with.
9.3 was niche, not as widespread as the romantic...
6.5 CM is a great round, its also boosted my favorite 6.5x55 as there are tons of bullets available in .264 now.
In fact the 6.5x55 sales have also pickled up; when I got mine over 20 years ago it was faltering and becoming really niche.
Its one of the top 10 now.
If you are allowed to reload, the 90gr Lee SWC bullet from their mold over a stoud load will penetrate as well as any 38.
I had a Rossi 38 as my 3rd or 4th pistol once, it was good enough to be passed to my sister for defence purposes.
I wish they made a LH model 7 , Id love one for myself!
I shoot anything up to Eland with a 6.5x55 so a 7mm-08 will do just fine if you use heavier bonded bullets for reliablity.
Norma Oryx would get my vote.
Wildebeest do seem to have a bigger will to live.
But I also think its because the shape of the body tempts you to shoot in a sub-optimal spot compared to anything else.
Thanks Bob, sounds promising.
So me and a mate each won one on a collectors auction for $65 and $70 USD.
Savage 23B and Sporter.
He has already bought the Lyman mould for the 65gr gas checked bullet and sourced a few 1000 gas checks along with dies.
Working on something for some cases from...
One thing really shows the bias, people who think the 7x57 is much better than a 6.5 CM.
If you shoot a 156gr Oryx out of a Creed and a 175gr anything in a 7x57 you will NOT see any difference on game.
In fact a Leopard is one of the only animals where a soft bullet is better than a premium...
I cant comment on the load itself other than it follows a perfect recipe for success.
A "solid shank" mono with bonded front core like Rhino or Bear Claw usually gives great performance.
I would even go with 180gr if you are not after Eland and meat damage is not a concern.
Either way a...
The area of NY sold to the NRA by Bernardus Hendrickson Creed looked a lot like the English moors but had very little game running around.
The name is a clue, its a target round first and foremost.
BUT it can be made to equal the 6.5x55 in the hunting field when you drop the long range target...
There is a big difference in what is realistic or not.
Anyone is expected to place a shot on a open hand sized target at 100m ; if you cant because you flinch you should not be shooting that .500 at the Buffalo.
Not everyone can place a shot at 1000m, at that range even the "experts" cant...
I have two bikes right now, 4 if you count my kids CRF230 and CRF125.
I have an KTM 1190R adventure bike and then a 300 XC-W enduro weapon.
Just got my second Roof of Africa medal last week, fun and games in the wet.
I see that "Outfitters" in the Cape have LH Magnum Zastava actions in stock.
I am looking at building my 300 H&H.
https://outfitters4africa.co.za/product/zastava-model-m70-magnum-calibre-left-hand-action/
7x64 is reasonably common down here, even PMP used to make ammo for them in the day.
Cases a' plenty and .284 is probably the 3rd or 4th most common bullet after .30 and .264.
.280 is scarce, unobtanium.
If I could find a left handed rifle in that caliber I would be all over it.
