    Mispronounced gun names

Ga-RAND vs GAR-and. Hatcher was clear that Garand rhymes with “parent.” Also “carbine” instead of “carbeen” drives me batty.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

My Aqualand Promaster sat dormant for years because it needed an overhaul, but I finally sent it to Citizen Dallas for servicing and got it back a few weeks ago. It isn’t one of my “fine” mechanical watches but I’m sentimental about it — my wife gave it to me as a wedding present and I wore it...

    Philosophy of Hunting

"It was a pleasure to walk in the easy rolling country, simply to walk, and to be able to hunt, not knowing what we might see and free to shoot for the meat we needed." — Ernest Hemingway, “Green Hills of Africa”

    *** Cowboy Boots ***

I’ve had a mini obsession lately with buying secondhand and distressed boots online and fixing them up to wear. This has included a pair of vintage military jump boots, crazy-horse leather logger boots, service boots and, yes, an old pair of Dan Post cowboy boots with a leather sole, stacked...

    Really light .30 caliber bullets

I have an M1 carbine, and I agree those look like .30 Carbine bullets. I only buy factory rounds and they’re 108 grains, but I’m intrigued about the FPS pickup from a slightly lighter bullet.

Show your work horses and bubba rifles

Definitely a bubba rifle: my sporterized Carcano with an improvised ghost ring rear sight and front blade made higher with JB Weld. Still, it shoots very well and has been 100% reliable, and I have no qualms about it getting rough treatment afield.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

For today’s bird & small game hunt: my new Invicta Pro Diver. We’ll call it an homage to the Rolex Submariner. The hunt got ruined by the emergence of feral hogs, but I knew precisely what time it happened.

Show your work horses and bubba rifles

This thread speaks to me. I’m having trouble posting pics of my dad’s old Remington 742 with chewed up receiver rails. I “fixed” it by blocking the gas port and converting it from semiauto to single-shot. It’s perfect for hunting spikes etc.

    "Original" M-65 Field Jacket

I live in San Antonio, the Promised Land of milspec/milsurp goods. I bought a woodland camo M-65 jacket at a surplus store a decade or so ago for $50 IIRC after freezing on a hunting trip, put the liner in it, and have never regretted the purchase. It’s heavy and not entirely waterproof, but it...

What was your best firearm deal?

I have several firearms that are poor man’s versions of a rich man’s guns. I wanted a Griffin & Howe Springfield 1903 like Ernest Hemingway used, and I ended up with this sporterized 1903 that I got for $325. I wanted a Mannlicher-Schönauer 1903 in 6.5x54 (Hemingway had that too). I ended...

Who Is The Next Hemingway, Ruark?

I’m a professional (nonfiction) writer. In 2015-16, when I was between jobs, an empty nester and kind of lost, I wrote a 50,000-word memoir about how hunting and sailing helped me regain a sense of purpose. It was pretty good so I shopped it around to publishers, especially those who specialize...

    Long trousers?

I haven’t hunted Africa yet, but about 95% of my hunting has been in Texas, and yes, long pants are hot. Tall snake boots or snake gaiters also are hot, so much so that I get a prickly heat rash on my shins and calves. But I always wear long pants and gaiters because heat rash is much better...

    Fountain pen appreciation

Emptying the pen is the best way to prevent leaks; second best is traveling with a completely full cartridge or ink bladder. If there isn’t any air inside the pen to expand, there isn’t as much chance of a leak. A partially filled pen is the worst option.

How far do you have to travel to even hunt?

Exactly. Nothing good can come from large employers, industries and economic generators. Not to mention the evil universities, hospitals, art museums, theaters and symphonies. Don’t even get me started on sports teams and arenas! Obviously no one could ever bear to live in a city, except for the...

    Thoughts on type of camps

    Thoughts on type of camps

Me too. If/when I go on safari, it will be to hunt game that I can’t hunt here and to get an experience, not to prove how wealthy and pampered I am. I can stay in a fancy lodge anywhere. On safari I’d prefer that time and resources go to the hunt.

    The Gun That Got Away
