Ammo cannot be packed inside luggage?

I’ve always been ready to check the ammo as a separate piece of luggage. I pack it in a hard case with locks on it and labeled with my name. So far, I’ve never been asked to pull it out of my checked bag.

Which countries offer the most affordable Sheep/goat hunts?

If you would consider far west Texas, you can hunt Barbary Seep (a.k.a Aoudad) for remarkably low cost. It’s a real sheep hunt. Steep, scenic country and a unique trophy. They were transplanted decades ago. Now they range freely.

    Hats on safari

The best way to acquire a pithy is to be gifted one. By a good friend. In Africa. Drinking whiskey (Or whisky.) Around a campfire.

It doesn’t look like the same one. The boss was nearly closed at the seem in the field picture. The gap is really quite wide in the taxidermy photo.

Best Scope for Baited Leopard Hunt at Night

I’m hunting leopard for the first time next year. So I‘m not an expert. That said, I’m using a Leica Amplus 2.5-15 50mm illuminated scope. It has a 30mm tube, so it gathers a lot of light.

    ZIMBABWE: Zimbabwe With Buzz Charlton

You’re about to experience a bucket list hunt. I’m envious. CMS is a top notch outfitter. I hunted their Dande area a few years ago and it was epic. Enjoy and share your story!!!

    Leopard Hunt opinions

Like @Red Leg said, I think Namibia is worth checking out. In fact, I’ve placed my bet and booked a hunt in the Erongo foothills next April. I’ll be hunting with Werner von Seydlitz. He runs Immenhof Hunting. This will be my 3rd safari with Werner. That should tell you what I think about...

    New restrictions on firearms exports

Another problem is that the people charged with enforcing these new rules will be confused or willfully ignorant and all of us who travel will be subject to their errors. Remember all the problems people had even after the EEI/AES regulations were clarified? For months a few unfortunate people...

Any reason not to use a 300 PRC for Plains Game??

Seems that folks who’ve hunted in the Eastern Cape and the Kalahari have reported longer shots than those who hunt in the Limpopo. So the reach of a300PRC might see an application in EC and the desert. My longest shot in the Limpopo was probably 120 yards. No issue for my 375H&H.

    “Safari” vs Hunting Trip?

Privilege is a word that gets tossed around a lot. Usually by those who haven’t sacrificed to achieve their goals to describe those who have. I know that the only times I have felt truly privileged is on safari. To have been able to participate in the world’s most exciting, rewarding and...

    Form

I’ve always been fascinated with aircraft. One of my favorites is the Lockheed Electra. The first all-metal aircraft. Those huge radials on a mid-sized AC make a statement. I’d love to have one as my personal aircraft. I wouldn’t mind the relative slowness compared to a private jet. When...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

Like pretty much everything else, the future value of a production gun depends on what gun you’re buying. A Winchester model 70 super grade cost about 90 bucks in 1960. In a run-of-the-mill caliber, like a .270, it’s probably worth $800 today. It will fetch several times that in 300 H&H.

    And now…Dickey Betts

It’s not really surprising that, as the greatest musical generation reaches the end of the line, to hear another great has passed away. Now, we learn that Dickie Betts has left us. A founding member and co-lead guitarist for blues-rock legends the Allman Brothers Band, passed away today at the...

    Optics thoughts, Leica vs Leupold

Maybe I’m wrong about this, since it has been awhile since I looked for a scope. But the Europeans still offer fairly uncomplicated scopes for the hunter. Nearly all of Leupold’s line of scopes now feature a number of wheelygigs and geegaws that I have no use for.
  29. Doug3006

    Optics thoughts, Leica vs Leupold

Once you get up to Leupold-level quality, the improvements (in resolution, repeatability in controls, eye relief, etc.) come in smaller and smaller increments. I have both of the scopes you mention, the Leica Amplus and the Leupold VH6HD. The Leica has slightly better resolution. I haven’t...

    First time to Africa question

I’ve been to Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) and have carried ammunition packaged in plastic cases each time. Never any issue. Some airlines state that ammunition must be packaged in factory boxes or containers specifically designed for ammunition. They don’t want ammo...

SCI Record Book- The World Hunting Awards, Continental, & Milestones.

Age rather than inches. That’s my main reason for not participating in the measurement-based awards. A 36 inch, hard bossed dugga boy is a trophy. A 42 inch youngster who’s still running with the herd is not. At least in my book. Like @Red Leg, I have a good idea of what all of my trophies...

    Not good news from Federal

I doubt that any future foreign owner would want to move ammunition production out of the US. Most foreign countries are like California or New York in terms of their anti-gun mindset. I’d bet that the US factories would be a plus for a company like CZ.

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Boss Safaris?

How long has it been since you asked them for the list? References should be at their fingertips. Personally, I’d walk away if it has been more than a couple of weeks. If a provider is slow to respond to a prospect, they won’t be responsive when you are a booked client.

Dakota 76 in 330 Dakota buy or pass

$2,000 is a very good price for a Dakota like you describe. I suspect the 330 Dakota chambering is the reason for the discount. Ammunition will be hard to come by. I believe it’s a reloading-only proposition. With the cases and ammo included, it’s hard to argue. Buy it!

Client killed Kafue National Park, Zambia

@Jeff505 and I experienced the same thing twice in the Luangwa! All except the deadly outcome. Still a closer deal than we would prefer. The elephants there are being harassed so much that they’ve become homicidal! My prayers for the dead and their loved ones. So tragic.

    Ticks

Eland are also greatly afflicted by ticks. One of them I took in the Limpopo had lost an ear to an especially sever infestation. I’m told that periodically burning the bush is the best way to control them. Unfortunately this conservation best practice has become rare In SA.

    RSA land reform bill

Bad news for sure. Especially for the people of SA. “Land Reform” has been a disaster for Zimbabwe, but it’s so politically attractive, that SA seemingly can’t help but go down the same dark path. As for us hunters, I doubt much of anything will change in our lifetimes. Zimbabwe has been in...

    Ticks

There’s some good advice being offered here. Permethrin seems to work best. Just soak your clothes in it and hang them up to dry before you leave. Reapply after 2 or 3 washings (not after 6 as some instructions say.) You should be fine.

    Boeing Aircraft

I worked on the military side of McDonnell Douglas for 10 years. I agree that the Douglas culture was odd, and markedly different than the McDonnell side of the company. However, it won’t be necessary to purge any Douglas people at Boeing. The merger happened in 1997, nearly 30 years ago. The...

    Barnes TSX or not

Oh, I got a Yellow Fever shot before a trip to Zambia. I experienced no side effects. If I remember correctly, SA won’t let you in without a vaccination card if you’ve been to a country where YF exists. So, if you are transiting through SA either coming or going, you’ll need a vaccine card.
  45. Doug3006

    Barnes TSX or not

@IvW is right. The TSX is a wonderful bullet for many applications, but I think there are better choices for lion. You’ll want a bullet that expands reliably in a not-so-tough animal like lion. The TSX will probably not expand enough before exiting. In order, my choices would be Nosler...

    Leopard Setup

I’m booked for a leopard in Namibia next April. I’ll use a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in 30-06. I’ve arrived at a load using 180 Hornady Interlocks that yields half inch groups at 100 yards. I’ll let everyone know how it works.

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

The Winchester Model 70 come in 458 Winchester. Plenty of them were made in New Haven. Big guns don’t get shot a lot, so they’ll still have plenty of mechanical life left.
