Honestly the recoil from my 12 gauge 870 with 3" turkey/ waterfowl shells is worse than my .375. I'd imagine if you're training with a. 416 you'll be fine.
If you just want to get used to recoil and beat yourself up shoot a pump shotgun with cheap steel waterfowl shells. If you can shoot that...
How old is the shooter? I started my son with a .22. If it's for hunting it may be easier to get a rifle with a shorter length of pull that fits them better in a caliber that has low recoil to begin with.
Depending on what you're hunting there are plenty of low recoil rifles made in youth...
Old guys with red range officer hats are the worst. They usually aren't there every day, but if they are when I get there I leave. They bitch about everything.
Agree on the $$ issue. Nice wood stocked rifles cost a lot more. If you're getting into shooting/ hunting you can drop $500 on a Synthetic rifle that is very accurate and can take abuse.
Even mil surp rifles have gone way up. On guns international dudes want $800 and up for beat up mosins...
Bring a friend with you and have him sit 2 seats to your left with an AR and a pile of mags. If someone starts dropping brass on you have your friend start mag dumping and drop more brass on them.
